SH track stars
prepare for H -P
South Huron's track and
field team is preparing for
next week's Huron -Perth
meet on May 10 and 11.
Several championships
should be brought home and
a few OFSSA hopefuls are
peaking for the upcoming
competitions.
The athlete's only meet last
week was in the pouring rain
at the Wingham Relays on
Thursday. Weather also caus-
ed the cancellation of Satur-
day's Nielsen Field Classic in
Seaforth.
Throwing was especially
difficult in the rain and wind
at Wingham. However six
wins were recorded for South
Huron's field athletes. Derek
Hippern won the junior
javelin with an incredible
throw of 56.8 metres. Improv-
ing on that distance should
put Hippern in the OFSSA
running.
In the midget girls discus
Andrea Pearce won with a
throw of 21.9 m. Dave Wood -
fine is also an OFSSA hopeful
with his success in the discus.
He won the Wingham meet
with 44.6 m. and is currently
number one in Western On-
tario rankings.
Jeff Rowe who qualified for
OFSSA javelin two years ago
is getting into shape and won
the senior boys javelin at
Wingham with 49.9 m.
Greg Becker's jump of 5.7
m. was good for the midget
boys championship in long
jump.
A rivalry between two
grade nine friends saw Bren-
da Wilson beat Paulette
Rauthbauer in the midget
girls indoor high jump. Wilson
won clearing 1.5 m. and a
jump of 1.42 m. gave
Rauthbauer third.
Faye Gaiser who is aiming
to repeat her OFSSA discus
appearance had a disappoin-
ting day in the rain at
Wingham. She was third in
senior girls javelin and discus
with below normal distances.
Only relays were run on the
track. South Huron had only
one win. The senior girls 1
kilometer 100-200-300-400
relay was won by Esther Van
Oss, Alice Dietrich, Mary Lou
Rundle and Sue Birmingham.
Track and field athletes had
their last competition before
Huron -Perth on Tuesday in
Goderich. The Vikings who
also host Huron -Perth on their
new track invited South
Huron and Stratford Central
to a tri -meet. A full slate of,
events was run to simulate
the competition of
conference.
South Huron has given up
on its bid to rival Stratford
Central for the overall team
title. Coach Terry O'Rourke
realizes that the Panthers
may have the quality but lack
the quantity needed to com-
pete with Central or even
Goderich.
