LUNCH AVAILABLE Auctioneers Sue Edginton Bud McIver RR 2, Lucan RR 2 Lucan For information phone 227-4111 A sea of yellow daffodils in bloom is normally a sure sign that spring is here. But unfor- tunately, the daffodils in my flower bed are" clusters of broken down brown stems and leaves. I almost had some daffodils in bloom - in fact, the green shoots were breaking through the ground 'way back in January. And by March, they were tall green plants with buds ready to burst open. Until March 21 when they were covered in a blanket of snow. I went out in that bliz- zard a cut a few buds, which did eventually open up, but the rest of the daffodil crop ended in total disaster. So if we can't have daffodils as a sign of spring, we'll have to look elsewhere for in- dicators that spring is here and summer is not too far around the corner. The first indication that spring is finally here came when the Arkona A's hockey team won the Lambton- Middlesex Rec League cham- pionship recently. This is a rather pleasant indication of spring, not just because the win calls for a celebration, but because it marks the end of the hockey season. And as all hockey widows know, that is the real reason for celebrating. It means that you won't have that large, cumbersome bag of hockey equipment dragged through the house twice a week. Nor will you have the so-called pleasant aroma of "Eau -de -hockey" which follows the bag of equipment. The end of the hockey season should mean that you will no longer hear the moans and groans about cuts and bruises, and you should be able to put the Ab- sorbine Junior back in the medicine cabinet for a few months. You know that spring is really here when you see that bag of hockey equipment be- ing dragged into the attic. Along with it go the curling brooms and boots. And you know 'that summer is just around the corner when the life jackets, paddles and water skis come down from the attic._ You know that spring is here when you see the snow fence out in the back yard come- down. Actually, folks, you can thank us for the mild snow -less winter. This is the first winter that we very energetically erected a snow fence to prevent the usual drifts from forming in our driveway. Naturally, it didn't snow! You know that spring is here and summer can't be far behind when you can drive through Grand Bend and have some Cheryl -Ann french fries and Baskin-Robbins ice cream. Another sure-fire in- dicator is the opening of the Mary's m usings By Mary Alderson Starlite Drive -In theatre. Unfortunately, with the good news comes the bad - you know that spring is here when you can no longer put off raking the lawn. But first you have to walk around and pick up all those branches and limbs that blewdown from the willow tree over the winter. And, of course. there's spring clothing • and this spring seems as if everything needs cleaning - the bird cage. the cupboards, the closets, the dog house, even the septic tank. It's a good thing that summer follows spring - hav- ing May 24 as a deadline pro- vides the motivation to get all these chores done. There's one last sign of spring - and it's a very impor- tant one.
