South
For the second consecutive
year the long months of deter-
mination and hard work paid
off in a WOSSA championship
for South Huron's gymnastics
team.
Talented but modest
Catherine Patterson won the
Elite B individual title, her
third divisional champion-
ship. "Pits" qualifies for
OFSSA along with elite Starr
Jesney who was third overall.
A successful but somewhat
disappointing performance
gave Lee O'Rourke second
overall in the junior division.
The intermediate third
overall place was won by
Leigh Bernard, South Huron's
most entertaining gymnast.
A computer miscalculation
allowed the South Huron team
to return from last Saturday's
WOSSA meet in St. Thomas
believing that they had not
placed as a team. The
mistakes are still being
cleared up. South Huron's
junior team was mistakenly

Badminton is a growing
sport at South Huron. Birdie
enthusiast and high school
coach Pat Rowe has en-
couraged this growth through
her Thursday nights Badmin-
ton club, which is just now
finishing. The club has
developed several players
who are now playing and win-
ning for South Huron -'s high
school team.
The skills that have been
nurtured were in the forefront
of last weekend's Larry
Kneebone Memorial Badmin-
ton Doubles and Mixed Tour-
nament, held at Fanshawe
College and the Robart's
school.
'Saturday, South Huron's
juniors completely dominated
the London schools. All three
championships were won by
South Huron.
The very successful team of
Kendra Arthur and Angelina
Malik won the girls' doubles.
Kendra matched up with
Scott Bogart to win the mix-
ed doubles. Boys' doubles was
won by Bogart and George
Pratt. George and Angelina
were second in the mixed.
The boys B flight was won by
Murray Rundle and Jeff
Francis. .
Helping the junior team to
victory were Pam Cottrell,
Margi Chaffe, Brian Topp and
Mike Berg.
Coach Rowe's problem for
Huron -Perth is that her
talented players can only
enter one competition. Those
playing doubles cannot also
compete in the mixed. This
catch narrows South Huron's
chances at the overal team
titles, especially against a
strong Listowgl team. Rowe
is considering doing some
juggling among her seniors
and juniors to achieve the
maximum strength for the
April 26 junior Huron -Perth.
The seniors were not as suc-
cessful on the weekend and
felt their lack of experience
against 32 other teams who
have played for several years
contributed to this.
Sunday's competition saw
Cheryl Cann and Patti Willis
win the B flight, winning two
out of three matches. Con-
sidering the time they have
practised and that this is
Willis' first year of badminton
competition the pair fared
well.
Brian Blackburn, Lovebest
Malik and Pete Janssen also
competed.
The seniors have less than
a week before the April 19
senior Huron -Perth cham-
pionship. The senior competi-
tion is very tough especially
if Stratford Central's Ontario
ranked athletes decide to
enter. South Huron's lack of
experience and players will
definitely hurt their ability to
repeat their successful 1982
season.
Both juniors and. seniors
played at Clinton yesterday in
exhibition matches. Medway
is holding a senior doubles
;tournament this Friday and
'Strathroy plays in Exeter on
Monday. The juniors compete
at Medway next Tuesday.
