Choosing a honeymoon
spot: the do's and don'ts
What advice does Bride's
• magazine have for the couple
planning a honeymoon?
• Be honest with each
other. How do you both
really want to spend your
honeymoon? Hiking? Shop-
ping? Or just lazing away on
a beach?
• Make your plans early.
You'll have a better chance
of getting exactly the space
at the time you want instead
of being disappointed or hav-
ing to pay more because the
rooms in your price range are
all taken.
• Take advantage of tim-
ing — with night -flight sav-
ings, weekday, excursion,
and special fares on land and
in the air. And be sure to
investigate off-season travel
too. Write to airline tour
departments, hotel chain
headquarters, and individual
resorts for brochures, rate
sheets, and hqneymoon
package details.

Expert advice
Michele Piccione, of
Alfred Angelo, leading de-

these tips on your decision
making:
• The bride should al-
ways select her gown and
accessories first. The other
dresses should have the
same feeling as to style,
period and over-all look.
• The bride's mother's
dress should be selected
next in sequence, and the
groom's mother.
Many bridal salons offer
a wide range of attractive
styles for the mother. Shop
together to try on a variety
of styles. '

Cultured pearls, cherished for
centuries, reflect bride's radiance
A strand of cultured
pearls adds aglowing touch
to bridal attire. Brilliantly
rich cultured pearls en-
hance the radiant bride's
beauty on her wedding day
as they always add a lus-
trous focal point to her out-
fit whenever they are worn.
In the future, the shim-
mering strand of cultured
pearls may be loaned to a
soon -to -be -wed sister,
niece or cousin who'll ap-
preciate the thoughtfulness
for something "old" and
"borrowed" to complete
her wedding attire.
Cherished for centuries,
the precious pearl has been
woven into numerous tales
regarding its. everlasting
beauty and value.
The ancient Greeks
believed that Aphrodite,
the goddess of love and
beauty, was born like a
pearl out of a shell that was
washed up from the sea.
According to Roman my-
thology. Venus, the god-
dess of love, was born in a
similar fashion.
In the East, the pearl rep-
resented love, gentleness,
purity and compassion — a
tradition'carried into every
part of the civilized world.
At one time, pearls were
the exclusive privilege of
the noble and wealthy.
Julius Caesar invaded Brit-
ain in order to obtain a trea-
sure of pearls, according to
the Roman historian, Sueto-
nius. After the invasion.
Caesar presented a breast
plate, set with pink pearls
from the Conway River in
Wales, to the goddess
Venus Genetrix in her tem-
ple in Rome.
Throughout history, roy-
al women decorated them-
selves in pearls. Queen
Nephretete of Egypt went
to her wedding practically
covered with pearls. Eliza-
beth I entwined pearls in
her hair, wore them as
necklaces and had them
embroidered into her
robes.
Today, cultured pearl
jewelry adorns many public
figures. Princess Diana
often wears a long, knotted
rope of cultured pearls.
The most formal look
would be a matinee or
opera length necklace fall-
ing softly over the bosom;
this style is equally alluring
with a high -standing collar.
Deeper, scooped neck-
lines are most luxurious
with a bib of several strands
of pearls falling from the
base of the throat to the top
of the gown's neckline,
For a final touch, wear a
delicate pair of cultured
pearl earrings or, if your
sleeves permit, a simple
single qr double strand cul-
tured pearl bracelet.
No matter what your
final selection may be, you
can be certain that your
time-honored cultured
pearls will be the perfect
choice in jewelry for your
wedding day and all the
honeymoons yet to come.
Cultured pearls,'the
prized gems of eternal
beauty, are worn by many •
women today who consider
their elegance and versatil-
ity a valuable investment.
In 1982, the most popular
cultured pearl jewelry ap-
peared to be necklaces
composed of uniform 5mm-
6mm cultured pearls. A
trend towards purchase of
longer necklaces, 24 to 30
inches in length, to comple-
ment the leaner look of cur-
rent fashions, also seems
prevalent.
If you don't already own
cultured pearl jewelry, why
not purchase a strand of.
cultured pearls for your

rist, take in a photo of the
attendants' gowns as well
as your own. Some flowers
wash out against certain,
colors, and others might be
garish.
• Shoes, hosiery. gloves
and even crinolines needn't
be left to chance. Some of
these items make lovely
and personal gifts to give
your "supporting cast,"
prior to the wedding day!

suggestions for older brides
Anyone who believes that
all brides are young and
blushing should consider
these facts: today, one fifth
of all women getting married
for the first time arc over 25.
Of these, one third arc in
their 30s 405 or older.
Whatever their separate
reasons for delaying mar-
riage — whether to pursue a
profession or simply to live
independently fora while —
once they do decide to go
ahead with it these older
brides.generally have this
question: "What kind of
wedding is right at my age?"
Bride's magazine has some
advice for this group of
brides:
• Many older brides pre-
fer small ceremonies with
only family and close friends
attending, but it's perfectly
okay to choose any size cer-
emony you like.
if you're like most older
brides. you'll have only a

- What about the question
of being "given away?" This
ritual can easily be omitted if
it makes you feel uncomfor-
table. But if you would like
to be given away, and your
father is not alive or able to
do so, feel free to ask any
male relative or usher to per-
form the role.
• Whatever size your cer-
emony. your reception may
be as large and lavish as you
wish. Invite friends. rela-
tives, business associates.
if certain reception cus-
toms such as throwing the
bouquet or tossing rice seem
a little "young" to you, leave
them out. But, remember.
everyone generally enjoys
the traditional cake cutting
and toasting.
• As for the invitations,
for a very small wedding,
invite guests in person or by
telephone —or write them a
personal note. If you'll invite"
more than 50 guests, a more
formal invitation is best.
Fora large wedding that
you and your groom sponsor
yourselves, use this word-
ing: "The honour ofyour
presence is requested at the
marriage of Miss Martha
Smith to Mr. Vincent Rog-
ers. etc."
• Feel perfect free to
wear a long. lacy w itc wed-
ding dress if this is what
you've always imagined
you'd do as a bride. if this
isn't you, consider off-white,
ivory. cream or the palest
pastels such as lavender or
sea -green.
A sleek style, such as a
gently flaring or softly -gath-
ered skirt With a simple bod-
ice and matching jacket, is
most attractive. Your dress
can he lohg or short but, for a
small wedding, you might
feel more comfortable in a
length that's just -below-the-
knee or mid-calf(very popu-
lar right now).
If you'd like, you can top
off your outfit with a hat,
maybe a hat with a short veil.
A pillbox style or a hat with a
delicate brim is especially
smart.
Where can you buy these
styles? Try a bridal salon or
your local store's bridal
department first. Many
bridal manufacturers are
developing whole new lines
of dresses that cater to the
sophisticated tastes of your
age -group.

During your bath, and
depending on your mood,
you might want to consider
these ideas:
• Let your bath work

• Make a mental "to-

• When you step out of

wonderful ways to feel
good with fragrance. First.

as your skin is softened and

You're getting engaged!
As 'nc of the biggest steps
you'll take in life, engage-
ment represents the com-
mitment of two people to
share their lives together. 11
is a time of transition that
prepares you for your
change in roles from boy-
friend to husband, girl-
friend to wife.
R'eteiving a diamond
engagement ring symbol-
izes this growth in your re-
lationship and, if you're
like most young couples
today, you probably won't
announce your engagement
until you make it official
with a ring.
Results of study
In a March, 1982, re-
search study of 200 young
women conducted by .Karl
E. Tietjen Research Asso-
ciates. 92 percent agree that
an engagement ring sym-
bolizes their fiance's love
will be with them at all
times. They perceive
engagement as a public
pledge for a lasting relation-
ship and want a diamond
engagement ring to symbol-
ize this stage of commit-
ment.
The first question most
bride's ask is how much an
engagement ring should
cost and how much should
be spent. As a rule of
thumb, bridal experts favor
a guideline of two months'
salary because it allows
most young couples the
opportunity to afford a
good quality diamond that
they'll be proud of in years
to come.
What will it cost?
Currently. a good -to -

selling for $600 to $1.200;1/3
carat, $800 to $1,700; /
carat $1,500 to $3,500 and
-14 carat, $3,000 to $6.000.
The next question asked
is whether one style is more

Its simple gold or platinum

of the single diamond since

The single -diamond en-
gagement ring provides a
young couple with their
best buy because the price
is determined almost exclu-
sively by the size of the one
center diamond. Choosing
a solitaire allows you to get
a larger, better quality

Conversely, if you choose

getting a much smaller stone

tion of the price is going into
paying for the band.
Comparison-shop
Before buying a diamond
engagement ring, do'some
comparision shopping.
Diamonds can vary drasti-
cally in quality and price.
Ask questions — that's the
quickest way to learn and
study up on the 4 C's: cut,
color, clarity and carat
weight. These are the stan-
dards jewelers use to evalu-
ate the quality of a dia-
mond. Here are a few
pointers that will explain
why one diamond can be
more expensive thaln
another:
• Cut: The beauty of a
diamond relies on the preci-
sion of the cutter and the
expert placement of the
facets or planes on a stone.
These tiny angles capture
and refract light to give a
diamond its fire and bril-
liance.
Most diamonds have 58
facets. Cut also refers to
the shape of a diamond —
round, oval, marquise pear.
heart and emerald.
• Color: People usually
think of diamonds as color-
less, but most are tinged
with yellow or brown. The
icy white diamond, which
has an absence of color, is
the most valuable.
Couritpy
FllowePs
a!
A light on color
Variations in color are
often so slight that they can
be detected only by an
expert under special lights.
The best way to see the true
color of a diamond is to
look at the stone through its
side against a white back-
ground.
There are also fancy -col-
ored diamonds available in
royal blue, cranberry red
and canary yellow. These
diamonds are very rare and
can be quite costly.
• Clarity: In the process
of crystallizing diamonds
out of carbon millions of
years ago, nature left minis-
cule birthmarks — specks,
bubbles and feathers—in
most diamonds._ These
specks are called inclusions
and ire not defects or
weaknesses.
Flawless diamonds rare
The term flawless refers
to a diamond that has no
inclusions when viewed
under 10 -power magnifica-
tion. There are very few
flawless diamonds, there-
fore such diamonds are
expensive.
• Carat weighs: A dia-
mond is measured in carats
and there are 100 points in a
carat, like the cents in a dol-
lar. A carat is equal to 1 of
a gram and there are 142
carats to the ounce.
Consider the 4 C's
The larger the diamond,
the scarcer it is and the
higher the value per carat
but, remember that size
alone does not determine
value. Cut, color and clar-
ity must also be taken into
account. For example, a
top -color, flawless half -
carat diamond will be worth
more than a warmer color,
flawed one -carat stone.
When you stop to think
that you'll probably be
spending about two
months' salary for a dia-
mond engagement ring, it
pays to learn all you can
about the 4C's.
