T -A photo Rec tourney on weekend in Exeter, Huron Park The first annual South Huron recreational hockey tournament will be held this weekend with 16 teams participating. The triple knockout tourney will start at 10 a.m. Good Fri- day morning on two fronts at the South Huron Rec Centre in Exeter and the Stephen township arena, at Huron Park and continue until 8 p.m. The tourney resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday again at both arenas with the finals to be held at the South Huron Rec Centre the salve afternoon. Jason Heywood with a three goal performance led the Exeter scoring attack in the opening game. He Scored the tying goal with two minutes left in the third period only to have Bothwell get the winnerin overtime. The other Exeter goals were notched by Brad Thompson • and Ryan Lindenfield. Ryan Stuart was 'the top playmaker for Exeter with four assists to his credit. Also getting assists were Ryan Lindenfield and Fred Steciuk. Jason Heywood took care of the entire Exeter goal produc- tion in the final loss to Strathroy with four successful shots and all came on unassisted efforts. In the first contest, Clinton II opened up with a 2-0 lead before Henry DeBruyn scored his first of two goals on a pass from David Josephson at the four minute mark of the se- cond period. ' With only three minutes left In the shootout, Henry DeBruyn got his second goal and Jason McFalls added the clincher to seal a 4-2 victory for Exeter. The second game of the day was against the Clinton I en- try, a team that had played the entire season without a loss. • The Exeter team played Tie for first in arts • The Swat and Wubbu teams are deadlocked for first place in the Exeter mixed dart league with 87 points each. All in the Family are second with 76 points, the Scotties and Crusaders are tied for third with 73 points apiece and the. Evil Eyes follow ' with 72 points. Terry Heywood has achiev- ed the high score for ladies at 171 and the high take out at 111 while Gary Campbell 'is tops for men single scores at' 156 and Gerry Lawson has the high takeout at 114. Betty Bowerman with 25 leads the female darters in most games won and Wayne Parkinson with 42 is best for the men. • Personal records for spare performers are Duff Rothbauer with27 and Elsie MacDonald with nine games won, Harvey. Hillman high men's score of 160, Thea Rothbauer and Esther Hillman at 101 for ladies high score and high takeouts Dorothy Reynolds 41 and Duff ,Rothbauer 78. The junior game is at 7:30 p.m. followed by the seniors at 8:45. Each Huron County team sends its best to match up against thePerth all-stars. The teams should be fairly well - matched for both junior and senior games.. Not used to playing together, these teams will not be able to develop plays or involved defences, especially having practiced only once or twice. Huron's junior team will be • boosted by South Huron's Scott Lovie and Rob Tait, in grade eleven and ten respectively. . Kevin Parsons' speed and jumping strength, especially inthe Huron -Perth finals earned him a spot on .the senior all-star team. John Mol's height and John McAllister's controlled play will be needed by the slightly inferior Huron seniors: Perth will be have strong represen- tation from Stratford Nor- thwestern, Central and Mit- chell. Both Parsons and McAllister are in their final - year at South Huron while Mol is in grade 12. With an abur- dance of eager junior players Rowe is considelting moving some up into the senior ranks. The competition is stiffer but more can compete. The " seniors will have little time to prepare with Huron -Perth on April 19 and WOSSA the next Saturday. The badminton team plans several exhibition matches with area schools. Their first tournament is April Sand 10. The juniors play Saturday and the seniors on Sunday in the Larry . Kneebone Memorial tournament. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m. and should be finished - by 4:00 p.m., an improvement over last year's meet which ran into the early morning.. The Huron -Perth conference has grown with many more competitors in the junior and intermediate divisions. Only five schools -send gymnasts to the competition. Teams from Norwell, Stratford Nor- thwestern, Clinton and especially the hosts, Listowel will attempt to decrease South Huron's domination in . this sport. Huron -Perth is the first. and for some. only gym- nastics competition'. The top four finishers on each ap- paratus in each divisioh qualify to compete at WOSSA on April 9 in St. Thomas' Parkside Collegiate. South Huron coach Gayle Ecker realizes that the unac- customed pressure of com- petition will affect her gym- nasts, especially the junior team. The intense concentra- tion required in all routines must not be upset by awareness of spectators, judges and fellow competitors. • South Huron's junior team looks very strong but may suffer because half of its/ members travelled South in the March break, missing several: practices. Free ice time was provided to the Exeter Figure Skating club for a skating school to prepare for tests at week's end. Exeter pros Marg Carey, Brenda Pincombe and Steve Wong, assisted by four others from Goderich. ilderton and Parkhill, gave professional instruction to 35 skaters each day. Bowling enthusiasts tested their skills at the Exeter lanes on Monday and Thursday. and swimmers were bused to Vanastra to enjoy their favourite sport on Tuesday and Friday. A total of almost 300 young people took in one of the three movies, The Whiz, Arabian Adventures and Charlotte's Web. . The flag and Bone Puppet Theatre from Ottawa, hooked through the Ontario Arts ('ouncil, drew an audience of move than 100 children, and some adults. They watched the three-person troupe use appealing, hand -made pup- pets to tell a French Canadian folk tale, and a legend of earth past and future starring a placid Holstein cow. During lulls in the planned activities, free 'skating was available. DRAW WINNER The raffle draw for a quarter of beef, sponsored by the Huron Perth Lung Association, took place on Wednesday evening. . The winner is A. V. Lisa Rundle who broke her toe during last year's beam routine is still competing as an intermediate. Sandra McCurdy has also dropped down a level into the senior category and could do well. A very promising gym- nastics season was ruined for Jackie Cottrell as she missed the landing mat on her bars dismount last week and in- jured her lower leg. Cottrell will be unable to compete this season but will hopefully be recovered for the upcoming track season. • Elite Catherine Patterson will strive for her third all- ) Ontario appearance; 'Pits' has built up her strength this year and is on,her way to another successful season. - Starr.lesney will be right with Patterson in the elite division. South Huron's only grade thirteen team member, Sarah " . McClure will be completing her five years as a gymnast.
