First time in 20 years Panthers win H.P senior basketball A well-deserved goal was achieved as Terry O'Rourke and South Huron's senior boys basketball team brought home the 1983 Huron -Perth championship. This was O'Rourke's first boys' title team and South Huron's first since 1963. The team celebrated in true Huron County style as they took the firetruck around Exeter. South Huron's exciting win over Stratford Northwestern Huskies Tuesday was not in the Panthers' claws until the last minute when Stratford's fouling gave SH the final 65-62 advantage. In the first half the Huskies were on their way to repeat the second game of the best of three final, which they had won by 22 points. Nor- thwestern's shots were hitting the mark from a 30 ft. radius. O'Rourke said "We used three different defenses and finally shut them down." Although South Huron was down by 7 at the half John Mol and Kevin Parsons superb playing helped them to nar- row the third quarter score to 49-48. Exeter's defense was effective and Mol was suc- cessful in rejecting many Huskie shots. Fouls .ended the fourth quarter duel as the two teams matched basket for basket. O'Rourke noted that despite this was his team's first II -P final. "they played with control." South Huron cut down their turnovers considerably. six turnovers compared to the uncontrolled passes of the se- cond game. John Mol shook the jitters that had held him to three foul shots in. the se- cond game to pour on 25 points. Kevin Parsons led the team aggressively, scoring 12 points. John McAllister kept the team together as he and Brent Atthill each had nine points. Defensively Steve Riddell was responsible for the Huskies low scoring in the se- cond half and also scored eight points. The South Huron squad worked diligently all season for this championship. Their overall record was an im- pressive 32 wins and 14 losses. Many long hours in gym paid off on the court at Nor- thwestern last week. It was an especially sweet victory. for Kevin Parsons, Steve Rid- dell, John McAllister and Bruce Berg who are graduating this year. WOSSA play Four five-year players finished their high school basketball careers Friday al WOSSA "AA" in Goderich. As H -P champs South Huron lost to Sarnia Collegiate Institute 47-44. The boys, who also started exams on Friday, had dif- ficulty getting going as first quarter play was rather slug- gish, ending at a low 8-8 tie. Turnovers again plagued the Panthers as they moved to a faster, breaking game. John Mol had a good game with 15 points and helped Steve Riddell control Sarnia's BLOCKED SHOT -- South Huron Panther centre Jo n Mol (55) blocked several Sarnia shots in the WOSSA playoff in Goderich, Friday, including this one being taken by John Vargo. However, Sarnia still managed a three-point win to eliminate the locals. Other Pan- thers in the action are Brent Atthill, George Tomes and John McAllister. Local atoms need victory Exeter atoms faced elimination when they travell- ed to St. Marys last night, Tuesday, for the third game in their best of five series. After losing a close 4-1 deci- sion in St. Marys Tuesday night, the locals were drubb- ed 8-2 at home, Sunday. in the second game of the series David O'Connor scored on a pass from David Dalrymple in the first period to give Exeter a 1-0 lead but St. Marys scored four goals in a row to put the game away. O'Connor scored again in the third period with help from Alan Blommaert and Mark Burton before St Marys blitzed Steve Sillery in the Exeter net for four late goals to round out the rout. in St. Marys the home team took a first period lead and made it .stand up going into the third period when they struck for three quick goals to put the game away. Exeter's only goal came late in the game when O'Con- nor converted passes from Burton and Tim vanDam, If Exeter can hang on in St. Marys Tuesday they will return for game four at the South Huron Rec Centre, tonight Wednesdati at 6:30 Molting Hawks win, tie The Exeter Molting hawks gained a victory and a tie in two oldtimer hockey games this week. Wednesday they outscored the Lambeth Blues 7-3 and Monday night played a 4-4 draw with Forest. in the tie with Forest, Keith Ahrens led the Molting hawks with a goal and three assists. Getting one goal apiece were Bob McDonald, Jim Mac- Donald and Jack Chipchase. Bob McDonald also assisted on two scores. Keith Ahrens with a two goal effort led the Ilawks win over Lambeth. Single goals were notched by Jim Pfaff. Bili Pincombe, Al Rundle. Frank Boyle and Al Flynn. Bob McDonald was the leading playmaker with a pair of assists while Jim Mac- Donald, Jim Pfaff, Pete McFalls and Jack Chipchase each helped set up one goal. height. Early season exhibition play saw Exeter defeat Ingersoll and lose to Strathroy by three points. O'Rourke felt it could have been any of the conten- ding teams' crown. . The prestigious and well- earned Iluron-Perth senior boys basketball champion- ship is added to this Year's achievements of South Huron. In the fall the field hockey team won Huron -Perth and WOSSA and were third at OFSSA. Iluron-Perth and WOSSA crowns were also won by the senior girls cross- country team who were fifth at OFSSA. The senior girls basketball team. also coached by Terry O'Rourke narrowly missed the Iluron-Perth champion- ship. South Iluron's search for gold continues as the gym- nastic team prepares for Huron -Perth March 31 in Listowel. The girls are defen- ding Iluron-Perth and WOSSA champs. All star basketball With the season over for most boys basketball teams the battle between the coun- ties commences. In both junior and senior divisions the All-St9rs from Huron County meet the all-stars from Perth in a grudge.match to be held at Stratford Northwestern Thursday, March 31. The junior game is at 7:00 p.m. and the seniors play at 8:15 p. m. Rob Tait and Scott Lovie are South Huron's represen- tatives for Huron's junior team. Tait and Lovie led S -f I to a play-off spot in Huron - Perth action. The senior game will be a repeat of the final as South Iluron and Northwestern will be on opposing teams. John McAllister,' Kevin Parsons and John Mol have been chosen for the Huron All-Star team. Terry O'Rourke will co - coach the Huron team witin Johnson from Seaforth. Although Seaforth was eliminated from Huron Perth in the semi finals, they went on to win the WOSSA 'A'. Their all-star players will be ready for play after their Lucan wins atom crown The Lucan atoms recently won the Shamrock "B" playoff charnaionship in Bel- mont and on the weekend won the "C" title in an atom tour- nament in Brussels. in winning the Shamrock ti- tle the Lucan youngsters defeated Mount Brydges 5-0, Parkhill 4-2 and South London 2-1. Steve Snider and Steven Nixon each scored two goals and Ed Van Kerkoerle added a single in the win over Mount Brydges. Getting single scores for Lucan in the 4-2 win over Parkhill were Steven Snider, Ed Van Kerkoerle, Steven Nixon and Paul Manders. Goals by Snider and Nixon clinched the 2-1 win over South London. In the Brussels tourney, Lucan downed Elma-Logan and Parkhill by indentical 3-2 scores and edged Milverton 2-1 in the championship final. Steven Nixon scored two goals in each of the 3-2 vic- tories. Notching the single scores were Ed Van Kerkoerle and Brain Lewis.
