Special awards time
It's time again to think about who will be award-
ed the many individual trophies and awards up for
grabs by National Hockey League players.
Don't be surprised if Wayne Gretzky again wins
the Hart trophy as the NHL's most valuable
player although he might get some opposition
from Boston Bruins goalie Pete Peeters.
For the top defenceman the experts will likely
go for either Mark Howe or Rod Langway, but,
how about Borje Salming of the Leafs as a dark
horse. Salming has been one of the big reasons for
the great turnaround for the Toronto club and in
recent games has been logging a lot of ice time.
Logical candidates for the Lady Byng trophy as
the most gentlemanly player are Jari Kurri,
Michael Goulet and Mike Bossy with defenceman
Paul Reinhart having an outside chance. The on-
ly rearguard ever to take home the Lady Byng
silverware was Simcoe native Leonard 'Red'
Kelly.
Vying for rookie of the year and the Calder
trophy are a number of very impressive first year
performers. Included in this list are fellows like
Steve Larmer, Pelle Lindbergh, Phil Housley and
Kitchener Ranger graduate Scott Stevens.
The battle for the Frank Selke trophy for best
defensive forward should be restricted to Dave
Hunter, Bobby Gould and the perennial candidate
Bob Gainey.
We will go for Gerry Cheevers as coach of the
year. Close contenders should be Orval Tessier
• and Bob McCammon.
University hockey
Three graduates of the Exeter minor hockey
system were involved in university hockey
playoffs over the weekend.
Dave Bogart was with the Laurier Golden
Hawks participating in the Canadian University
championships in Moncton, New Brunswick and
twin brothers Paul and Perry Pooley were at the
Joe Louis arena in Detroit as the Ohio State
Buckeyes were in playoff action.
The Laurier team won their first, game by a
score of 5-4 over Brandon and then fell 10-1 at the
hands of the eventual champion University of
Saskatchewan Huskies.
Local high school teacher Ron Bogart was at
most of the playoff series in Moncton to see his son
play and said the Saskatchewan team played
almost perfect passing hockey.
Bogart told us, "The way they played in the one
game I saw, they could have probably beaten a
number of NHL teams with their almost perfect
passing. In the entire game they made only about
two passes that went astray."
The Ohio State Buckeyes after losing their open-
ing game to Michigan State bounced back to win
the consolation championship.
The latest press release from Ohio State tells us
that the Pooley's are closing in on a number of
school records.
Paul is now fifth in single season goals with 31,
seventh in single season points with 65, sixth in
career goals at 80, tied for ninth in career assists
at 90 and seventh in career points at 170.
Perry has moved up to the tenth spot in single
season goals with 27.
In 34 Buckeye games, Paul is third in team scor-
ing with 31 goals and 34 assists for 65 points in 34
games while Perry is fourth with 27 goals and 26
assists for 63 points in 38 starts.
Soccer starting
The Exeter Centennials are planning on getting
in some early workouts for the upcoming summer
soccer season.
The Centennial senior A and B teams will start
practice sessions Tuesday, March 22 at South
Huron District High School at 8 p.m.
All new soccer players are welcome to come
out.
While talking about soccer, the Lucan Minor
Soccer Association is holding their annual
registrations at the Lucan arena on the next two
Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for boys aged six
to 16 and girls between the ages of eight and 16
years.
Adopting Stapleton training
A couple of weeks ago, former NHL defence star
Pat Stapleton was in Exeter making a presenta-
tion of his minor hockey training program which
he has started in the eastern provinces with the
assistance of Pepsi Cola.
Since that time officials of the Exeter Minor
Hockey Association have decided to adopt
Stapleton's basic training programs starting in
the fall of this year.
Well done, Panthers
Our congratulations go out this week to the South
Huron District High School senior Panthers basketball
team in winning the Iluron-Perth championship.
It's the first senior 11-P title for the local school' for
some time since Glenn Mickre last guided his boys to
the two county championships.
A lot of credit is due to coach Terry O'Rourke for
sticking with the ship through thick and thin and final-
ly coming up with a championship calibre club.
Short midgets win
The Exeter midgets, reduc-
ed to only eight skaters due to
high school exams, scored a
4-2 win over Mitchell in an ex-
hibition game, Monday.
The contest was a rough af-
fair that erupted into two
fights and left the locals with
only six skaters to finish the
game.
Don Hamilton, Steve Gould,
Scott Lovie and Doug Scott
scored for Exeter with Peter
Janssen picking up two
assists and Brent Dawson,
Scott and Gould recording
singles.
