Shipley of the Lucan Irish sweep around the Tavistock Senior Panthers in WOSSA finals I The senior boys basketball team is making history these weeks. Their close exciting win over Mitchell Blue Devils last Tuesday put South Huron into theHuron-Perth finals for the first time since 1963. South Huron and Stratford Northwestern were tied at a game a piece in the be3°tr of two out of three finals. Yester- day afternoon's game in Stratford decided the 1983 Huron Perth Champion. The semi-final game in Mit- chell was undecided until the last minute' The 13lue Devils led by fourpoints in the first quarter but South Iluron stall- ed to leave it tied at 20 at the half. Greg Whitlock of Mitchell was not shooting as well as he has in the past as Exeter managed to control all Mit- chell players. The Panthers and Blue Molting Hawks get two wins The Exeter Molting Hawks gained an even split in four oldtimer hockey games played during the past two weeks. A week ago the Hawks lost 4-2 to Strathroy and defeated CFB London by a score of 5-3: Mike Cushman and Bill Pincombe each picked up a goal and an assist in the loss to Strathroy. Jim Russell also assisted. Bob Jones, Keith Ahrens, Jim Russell, Jack Chipchase and Pete McFalls scored against London. Saturday, the Hawks were on the short end of an 8-2 score to the London Oldtimers at the Gardens and Sunday they edged the Forest Oldtimers 5-4.. in the8-2 loss to London Jim Russell and Mike Cushman were the Exeter marksmen with assists to Jack Chip - chase and Al Flynn. Mike Cushman led the Ex- eter scoring attack in the win over Forest with a two goal effort. Scoring in single fashion were Bob McDonald, Bob Jones and Keith Ahrens.' Devils matched basket for basket in the last quarter after Kevin Parson's incredi- ble half -court shot at the buzzer of the third quarter gave South Huron a 30-28 lead. The fourth quarter showed some excellent basketball as both teams strove for the tangible ticket to the finals. South Huron kept their heads together and stalled the game forcing Mitchell to foul in the final minute. Steve Riddell's. intense concentration on his WINS GOLD - Kathy Merner of the Zurich figure skating club was a gold medal winner at Sun- day's HOME skating com- petition in Exeter. -foul shots pounded the last nail into the Blue Devil's cof- fin as South Huron won 42-41. Bruce Berg, 'despite being knocked about on the floor, had a good game, scoring six points. ,John Mol and John McAllister played consistent- ly well, respectively adding 14 and 12 points. South Iluron continued their superior playing Thurs- day with a 61-45 victory over the tall Northwestern Huskies in the first game of the finals. SIH'ssenior squad kept their composure despite the capacity horfle audience and the pressure of being. in the finals. John McAllister set the tone of the game with his incredi- ble outside shots. South Huron established an early lead which they never relinquished. The Huskies definite height advantage gave South Iluron difficulty with rebounding. Offensively Northwestern could lob the hall in to tower- ing 6'8" Mike Otto hut South Huron was able to box him out of many shots. Brent Atthill boosted the spirits of the Panthers as he returned to the court for the first time since an appendec- tomy several weeks ago. "Atts" made good on several foul shots as well as adding to floor play. Northwestern crept to within two points as South Huron ran into foul trouble, but the Panthers slopped the Huskie comeback with a 22 point last quarter. Otto foul- ed out to leave a hole in Strat- ford's offence. Kevin Parsons and John McAllister, both in their last year of high school, had good outside shots which pulled Stratford's defence out. McAllister• had 19 points for Exeter. Few shots were going in for Exeter in the disastrous se- cond game at Northwestern. As coach Terry O'Rourke summarized. "They were up and we were down." The Huskies poured it on to force yesterday's lie -breaking game and last chance for both • teams. Northwestern dominated the. game to win 60-38. The large group of Panther supporters who travelled to Stratford Friday witnessed the severe beating of their basketball team. South Huron left the rebounding almost completely to Stratford. The Panther's usual team- work and heads -up play were not evident in Friday's game. Their defense was rather sluggish and short but quick Huskie, Rob James found many holes in the South Huron defense. • South Huron seniors were unable to shake their guards as Stratford used a man to man defense. The shots they did attempt were not hitting the mark as they had on Thursday. The Huskies were playing a quick game that South Iluron could not keep up with. South Huron lost the ball many times and Strat- ford made good on these opportunities. South Huron was still in the game until the third quarter when Northwestern shut down South Huron's offense completely. Their sole four points were all from foul shots. Stratford's 21 poin scoring drive ended the quarter at 54-31. South Huron had a lot to prove yesterday in the tie - breaking final. They needed a winning attitude and the con- fidence that they could be Huron -Perth champs. They have the ability to overcome Stratford Northwestern. The outcome of Tuesday's game decides whether South Huron will meet Sarnia Col- legiate institute or Sarnia Northern this Friday in WOSSA'AA' at Goderich high school. As Huron Perth champs they would play at 4 p.m. Otherwise they play the winner of Lambton at 7 p.m. South Huron is hosting the junior WOSSA 'AA' tourna- ment this Friday. Games are at 4:00. 5:30, 7:00 and 8:30 p.m.• Although South Iluron juniors were eliminated by Godcrich in the quarterfinals there will be good basketball involving eight Western On- tario junior teams.
