Times-Advocate, 1983-02-09, Page 8f Page 8 • Times -Advocate, February 9, 1983 Sports Spotlight By Ross Haugh As indicated a week ago, most of our column this week will be devoted to news gleaned from the recent stop in London of the Toronto. Blue Jays caravan. The five man delegation from the actual managing 'and playing roster was bubbling with enthusiasm. Pitching coach'Al Widmer who has been in organiz- ed baseball for 42 years said the Jays will take a back seat from no one in the American League in the depart- ment of pitching. Widmar is only one of the old Si. Louis Browns still around the baseball scene. The other two are Moptreal Expos coach Bill Demars and Les Moss, a coach with the Chicago White Sox. The two Toronto catchers werein London and both carried on theenthusiasm demonstrated firstly by Wid mar and Jays broadcaster Tom Cheek. Ernie Whitt said, "Last year's 78 victories was a cornerstone for us." Buck Martinez in his 13th year in baseball and considered to be one of the best handlers of young pitchers said the 1983 Jays will be better than the 1976 Kansas CIty Royals were. He was a member of that team that won their division pennant. While talking about. the Royals, manager Bobby Cox says Kansas City manager Dick Hauser calls the Blue Jays to win the American league eastern division championship. Hauser's prediction is probably based on the fact, the Jays beat the Royals eight, out of an even dozen games last year and won nine out of 12 from the Oakland A's. The first statement from Cox was, "We are good in 1982 but will be better this year. Last year was very gratifying. We gained respect all around the league, especially with our pitching. We led the league with 13 shutouts.' Cox is pleased with the acquisition of Dave Collins from the Yankees. He said Collins is in a super frame of mind and raring to go in Toronto. Collins who stole 80 bases in 1981 for the Cincinatti Reds before being picked up by the Yankees who out- bid Toronto for his services said he was sorry he didn't choose the Jays a year earlier. The Blue Jays manager said he Will try to utilize the speed of Collins and second baseman Damaso Gar- cia in the first two spots in the batting order.. When we asked which of -the two would appear in the leadoff spot Cox said, "That's hard to tell, but, if I was saying right now it would be Collins." Collins can play all three outfield spots and may be used occasionally at first base and possibly as the designated hitting spot against some left handed pitching. Asked if he would continue platooning as he did most of 1982 at five positions Cox said, "Earl Weaver has always done something similar -and it worked well for us last year. I expect to use Jesse Barfield more against righthanders this year." Cox expects to go with a four man starting rotation including Daye Stieb;.Jim.Clancy,,Luis Leal and Mike • Morgan recently over to Toronto from the Yankees. In answer to a question to any concerns for lack of left handed pitching Cox replied, "Sure, I'm concern- ed, :but, I worry ,a lot less with the four good starters I have. -Morgan has a strong arm and we know what the other threle starters can do." The only southpaw on the roster will likely be Dave Giesel used mostly out of the bull pen. The other relievers on which Cox will depend are Jim Gott and Roy Lee Jackson. About Gott, Cox said, '`He will be our main reliever and he is overpowering in short relief, probably as -quick as anybody for one inning." lie admitted the weakest spot on the club last year was the designated hitter and expects -Cliff Johnston to make a big improvement at that position. One of the Jays to have only a mediocre year by his own admission was rookie Lloyd Moseby and he said heis confident he has improved his fielding abilities tremendously and will also do better at the plate. Tom Cheek reported that all 162 Blue Jays games will be broadcast this summer on CKO-FM. Cox said he has great hopes for rookie' third baseman Jeff Reynolds who came to Toronto when John Mayberry was traded to the Yankees. He added, "Reynolds has lots of power and I feel he is only one year away from the big leagues." Shortstop Alfredo Griffin who was the only Jay to play all 162 games last year is expected to get plenty of competition for the job this year from rookie Tony Fernandez. • The Blue Jays open the 1983 season in Boston against the Red Sox on Tuesday. April 5 and will be at Exhibition Stadium for the first home game, Saturday, April 9 with the New York Yankees supplying the op- position. Game time is 1:30 p.m. • In OSU record book • Exeter native Paul Pooley has found his way into the Ohio State Buckeyes, hockey record book. Y Boost HOME TOWN Must beat Belmont Friday Hawks keep playoff hopes alive with three victories It will be "door die" for the Exeter Hawks when they face Belmont Bombers at the rec centre in the final game of thea season, Friday, but in com- parison to the challenge fac- ed by the locals in their playoff bid last week, winning a single game should be easy. The Hawks trailed Seaforth Centenaires by eight points in the race for the fourth and final playoff . spot with only five games remaining, and they won three of those to put themselves back in conten-. tion, surprising even their staunchest supporters.
