TO THE BASKET - Bruce Berg (20) moves past a Strat-
ford Northwestern guard as John Mol (55) waits for the
rebound. South Huron won the senior game 68.57,
Tykes win third
Saturday, the Exeter tyke
hockey club chalked up yet
another.victory, Coming away
froth Parkhill with a 5-3 win.
The team is unbeaten in three
starts.
In Saturday's contest, Ex-
eter slipped behind 2-1 after a
shakey first period. The
absence, to sickness, of
winger Eric Clay and defen-
sive player Robbie Wagner
was sorely felt.
Scoring two goals in the
first period for Parkhill was
Josh Vermeulen.
The single point for Exeter
was on a brilliant unassisted
breakaway by Jamie Van
Dam.
Parkhill roared back early
in the second period to record
their final goal of the game,
scored by Warren Haist.
Shortly after, Brent Gibson,
assisted by Steven Stire took
advantage of a defensive er-
ror and brought Exeter up to
within one goal. This goal was
gained late in the second on a
sharp effort by Trevor -
Taylor, assisted by Jamie
Van Dam.
Exeter moved ahead early
in the third period on a spec-
tacular double rebound effort
by Steven Stire, assisted by
Gavin Snell. Ian Jean slamm-
ed home the clincher
unassisted with eight seconds
left in the game.
Strong goaltending was
displayed by Jeremy Ander-
son in the first and Darren
Kints in the second and third
periods.
Forwards fan Jean, Ben
Parker, Jason Clay, Drew
Anderson, Steven Stire, Gavin
Snell and Jamie Van Dam
kept continual pressure on
Parkhill's netminder. Ex -
Junior cagers
lose in H -P
South Huron's junior
basketball team was unable
to catch up to Stratford Nor-.
thwestern's early lead in last
Friday night's league game in
Stratford. Exeter lost 56-51.
in a valiant effort led by
Rob Tait and Scott Lovie,
South Huron attempted to
make a comeback from their
first half of deficit of 32-16. In
the second half they outscored
Northwestern by 10 points
which wasn't quite enough.
South Huron's juniors also
ran into foul trouble and some
questionable calls. Rob Tait
was high scorer with an im-
pressive 20 points while Scott
Lovie was good for 18 points.
That close loss puts the
junior Panther's league
record at two wins and three
losses. They will have to win
most of their remaining five
games to ensure a playoff
spot. Their next league game
is Wednesday, February 9 at
Wingham.
Last week in exhibition
games South Huron juniors
were wiped by London Clarke
Road 66-25. They were unarm
to score or effectively, top
their superior opposition.
Against Parkhill, Sit
managed a 40-30 win. Scott
Lovie scored 19 points in that
home game.
Last night the juniors
played Glencoe. The team
should be able to do well in a
weekend tournament hosted
by Mitchell.
eter's top defensive players
were Aaron Prest, Ted Hoff-
man, Brent Gibson,' Trevor
Taylor, Ryan Kyle and Mat-
thew Godbolt.
Coach.Harry Stuart points
out that these same kids were
the ones that had trouble stan-
ding on skates in October.
Tykes are first year players,
six years of age and under.
The majority of Exeter's
Tykes this year fall in the four
and five year category.
' "Our kids have been so suc-
cessful because they never
give up. They're all heart,
when behind they pull out that
little extra and never look
back. They work hard at
practice and play the same
way. Coupled with tremen-
dous support from the
parents, how can we lose?
Even if another team should
finish with more points in a
game, we're still winners."
Coach Stuart would like to
thank Parkhill coach Debbie
Field and her great team and
extends an invitation back for
a second encounter on home
ice. Coach Stuart would also
like to compliment manager
John Campbell and trainer
Mike Clay who unfortunately
weren't able to be at Satur-
day's contest and thanks to
George Godbolt and Carrie
Stuart for stepping into the
box.
More exciting Tyke hockey
is planned including • the
possibility of attending a late
season tournament.

Juniors improve
in volleyball
South Huron's junior girls
volleyball continued their im-
provement by placing second
at the first annual Husky
Tournament hosted by Strat-
ford Northwester, . The
Senior team was,a disappoin
ting third at a weekend tour-
nament in Strathroy.
The junior teatn which has
won only one game in league
and lost seven definitely got
itself together as is evident by
their placing at this Stratford
tournament. -
The teams invited to the
Husky tournament were all
from Huron -Perth schools. In
round-robin play SH juniors
won five of their eight games
against Wingham, Stratford
Northwestern, Mitchell and
-St. Marys. It is notable that
both Wingham and St. Marys
have defeated South Huron in
league games earlier in the
season.
South Huron lost the first
game of the semi finals to
Stratford Northwestern 15-11,
but retaliated to win the next
two 15-13 and 15-10. In the last
tie-breaker game they were
losing 10-2 but fought back, an
amazing feat for a team that
has a history of becoming
frustrated and giving up.
The final games were close
against Wingham. Again a
tie-breaker was needed as
Wingham won the first game
15-11 and South Huron won the
second 15-13. Fatigue started
to tell on SH's juniors as they
lost the final game 15-10.
Coach Zankowski was very
pleased with his team's se-
cond place finish. Ile is hop-
ing to improve their league
record this Thursday when
they meet Mitchell and
Seaforth. South Huron is
hosting this league tourna-
ment which gets underway at
1:00 p.m. this Thursday after -
Molting Hawks
The Exeter Molting Hawks
picked up one victory in three
oldtimer hockey starts this
week.
They were trounced 15-1 by
the .Ilderton oldtimers on
January 24, came back with
a 5-4 victory over the CFB
London oldtimers Saturday
and Monday were on the short
end of a 6-5 score to the Lon-
don North Old Devils.
The only goal in the loss to
Ilderton was fired by Jim
Russell on a pass from Jim
Pfaff.
Scoring for the Molting
Hawks in the win over CFB
London were Keith Ahrens,
Walt Tiedema9, Pete
McFalls, Jim MacDonald and
Eric Finkbeiner.
Bob MacDonald with a two
goal effort was the top scorer
in the loss to London North.
Scoring in single fashion were
Keith Ahrens, Pete McFalls
and Mike Cushman.

noon. All Huron -Perth teams
will be playing. Junior games
are in the old gymnasium
while the seniors play in the
newer gymnasium. The
seniors also play against Mit-
chell and Seaforth and should
be able tobetter their six and
two record.
Play was rather erratic and
inconsistent for the seniors at
Strathroy's weekend tourna-
ment. The team has a tenden-
cy to rise or fall to the level of
its opposition. They play well
against strong, capable teams
but falter when playing
relatively boor teams.
This qui: k was evident on
the weekend as they lost
severely to Listowel and
Petrolia, teams which seldom
win. South Huron only won
half of their games, also los-
ing their very first game to
the host Strathroy team. -
However SH was the only
team in the tournament to
defeat the girls from Sarnia
Northern. Northern is a very
strong team which will un-
doubtedly be WOSSA con-
tenders. South Huron lost to
Sarnia in the senli-finals 12-15
and 10-15. SH had serving
trouble, which had plagued
them throughout the tourna-
ment. They were also unable
to return the tremendously
fast and strong spikes of one
of the Northern girls who
plays on the Ontario
Volleyball team.'
Cheryl Cann's serving
helped the team to their third
place finish. Good perfor-
mances were also turned in
by Leslie Hunter-Duvar, Patti
Willis, Faye Gaiser and
Charlene Yerbeek.
