T -A photo Close to elimination Hawks gft single point on weekend By managing only one point .in two weekend home games, the Exeter Hawks appear to have doomed themselves tt) miss the league playoffs for the first time in several years. While they are not mathematically eliminated from the fourth and final playoff spot yet, the Hawks face what appears to be an in- surmountable task to over- take the Seaforth Centenaires. The Centenaires picked up one win on the weekend to move six points ahead of Ex- eter but the locals have three games in hand heading into the final two weeks of the schedule. Seaforth have only two games remaining, one last night with the cellar dwelling Mitchell Hawks and then an encounter in Exeter this Sunday. For the Hawks to take ad- vantage of that home game with the Centenaires, they have to do something they have been unable to do all season, •and that's beat the Lucan Irish and the Tavistock Braves. The locals play in Lucan tonight (Wednesday), are at home to Thamesford, Friday, and then travel to Tavistock for a Saturday game before hosting Seaforth on Sunday. They wind up the season with a home game next Friday with Belmont. The only factor in their favor against Lucan and Tavistock is the fact the games mean nothing to those two squads. The Braves have wrapped up first place, while the Irish are destined for second. Lose to Browns The Hawks bowed to Thed- ford Browns by a 4-3 verdict at home, Sunday, failing in a golden opportunity to whittle Seaforth's six -point margin as the Centenaires were beaten by the same 4-3 count by Belmont. Steve Prout and Pete Tuckey spotted the Hawks to their first period margin and the Browns scored early in the second on a powerplay with Bill Glover in the penal- ty box. SH senior Gagers win Mitchell event South Huron's defeat of Stratford Northwestern's boys senior basketball team and their winning Mitchell's weekend tournament proved this team is well on its way to a Huron -Perth championship. Friday night at Nor- thwestern the SH Panthers dominated the game to win 68-57. The play was -rough and uncontrolled. There were in- juries as the referees allowed the play to get out of hand. Coach O'Rourke said, "The reffing left a lot to be desired." Each of his starting five players was fouled out in the third and fourth quarters. South Huron led throughout the game, 37-25 at the half, but it was tense in the final quarter as Exeter was forced to play its second string against a pressing Stratford team. The second line manag- ed well to maintain the point spread. Stratford Northwestern's team had great depth. They were able to relieve their first stringers with a whole new line-up that played almost equally as well. The Nor- thwestern centre husky, Mike Otto had 26 points but it is significant that 12 of these were scored on foul shots. Of the Husky's 57 points. 21 were from foul shots. The vocal crowd may have prejudiced the referees as over 100 South Huron fans travelled to Stratford for the games. John Mol.and John McAllister eachad 16 points before being fouled out in the last quarter. The shooting of Brent Atthill and Kevin Par- sons inspired the players as they had 13 and 8 'points respectively. Both were foul- ed out as was Steve Riddell who had 7 points. This win puts South i luron's regular season record at four wins and a IAss. Stratford_ Northwestern was their last major competition. They should easily win their re- maining five Huron -Perth games. South Huron's only defeat was their first league game which was against Mit- chell. They lost 56-37. However this past weekend the Panthers won the Mitchell tournament. A possible match -up in the Huron -Perth finals should 'go in South Huron's favour. The Huron - Perth senior boys basketball championship has been elusive for South Huron in the past several years. • South Huron never actual- ly confronted Mitchell at the tournament sponsored by the Kinsmen club In the first round the Panthers easily defeated a team from Elmira 58-49. The semi-final game was closer against Ingersoll. Play was forced into overtime when the score was tied at 48. four foul shot points clinched the 52-50 win for South Huron. In the final &H met.. London Oakridge who -defeated Mitchell in the -semi-finals: South Huron was not playing up to par and lost two starters to too many fouls but still managed to squeak in a 55-53 win and capture the tourna- ment championship. In fast year's Mitchell tournament Exeter was eliminated in the semi-finals. In exhibition play last week South Huron's seniors came up from behind to defeat Parkhill 52-47. Clarke Road resorted to their second strt'ng, allowing Exeter to creep up to a 47-46 final losing score. The London team was ranked eighth in last week's London Free Press Top Ten. Dale Stolk of The Free Press put South Huron Panthers as a team to watch, along with Stratford Northwestern. League games . were postponed until after this week's ski trip. Wednesday February 9 South Huron travels to 'Wingham to coq- tinue the regular season. Last night SH hosted Glencoe. Pee wees beat Ilderton The Exeter pee wees stored a 3-1 decision over Ilderton in their only start this week in the Shamrock hockey league. The local team sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary jumped into a 1-0 first period goal on an unassisted effort by Steve Anderson. Anderson notched the se- cond goal for his club early in the third period and Jeff Dalrymple followed with a successful shot. All came on solo dashes. Dearing stopped 19 shots, while Tadgell had four before leaving the game. Ed Willis picked up assists on two Exeter tallies, while helping on one each were Mike Clark, Tony Underhill, Glover and Prout. The Browns sat out 12 of the 19 penalties called by referee Bill Walsh. Battle for cellar The Exeter and Mitchell Hawks found themselves in an unusual situation when they faced off at the rec cen- tre, Friday. Normally, the teams are battling for the top league spot at this time of the year or are getting set for one of their fierce playoff battles, but this time it was more a fight. for the league basement. The teams battled to a 7-7 draw as Exeter scored with an • extra attacker with 25 seconds left. The draw leaves Mitchell four points behind Exeter in the battle for the basement. - Mitchell took a 3-2 lead in the first, split the second period 2-2, and then let the locals off the hook with their last-minute tally. Pete Tuckey paced Exeter with two goals, while adding singles were Bill Glover, Tony Underhill, Mike Clark, Dave Jackson and Tony Jones. The latter scored the tying goal. Scott Brintnell and Steve Prout had three assists each and Jackson. and Ed Willis helped out on two. Drawing single assists were Jamie Chaffe, Underhill and Tuekey. Dave Hook started in net for Exeter and made four saves before leaving with an injury late in the first. Mike Tadgell came on to record 18 saves, .while Dave Fischer ended up with 35 for the visitors. Exeter served 12 of the 22 penalties and scored the only two powerplay goals of the game. Irish. beat Trojans, bombed -by Braves The Lucan Irish. gained an even split in two OHA Western Junior "D" games this week. Wedhesdayy on home ice thely edged the Thamesford Trojans 6-4 and Friday in Tavistock they were bounced 10-4 by the league leading Tavistock Braves. The only action upcoming this week for the Irish is tonight, Wednesday when they will be at the Lucan arena at 8' 15 to take. on the Exeter Hawks. Chris Tiedeman notched a pair, one into an empty net with one second left. Dave Woodfine and Terry Zachar popped the singles. Picking yup assists on the goals were Tim Moore, Jim Lewis, Ted Lawson and Sean Whiteford.
