Another great dinner
Each year we dig out the same adjectives to
describe the upcoming Exeter Lions Club Sportsmen's
'dinner and this year is no exception.
Bigger and better than ever. That's what the
February 8 dinner at the South Huron Rec Centre pro-
mises to area sports fans who have made this popular
event so successful over the past nine years.
Right from the top to,the bottom of the head table
dinner chairman Clarence McDowell and his energetic
committee will have a list of top notch celebrities from
a wide variety of sporting interests.
Heading the speaking list will be Bobby Hull, the
former great Golden Jet of the Chicago Black Hawks.
Hull will be appearing each Saturday afternoon begin-
ning this week on Global television as the colour com-
mentator on the Ontario ,Junior Hockey League game
of the week.
The master of _ceremonies will be well known
wrestler Lord Athol Layton. Over the years, the local 1d nnerhas been graced with great introducers of the
uests and that same tradition should be continued this
ear.
The master of ceremonies for the first nine dinners
were the late Tory Gregg, Bruce Murray; Tuffy Knight,
Lee Paul, Bill Brady, Graham Leggat, Craig Baynham,
Jack Donohue and Father Joe Nelligan.
The balance of the speakers already verified in-
clude Glen Weir and Chuck Ealey from the Canadian
football league, Ernie Whitt of the Toronto Blue Jays.
and either Rick Vaive or Bill Derlago of the Toronto
Maple Leafs. • '
Just confirmed over the weekend was the ap-
pearance of Laurie Skreslet who was one of the suc-
cessful mountain climbers to get to the top of Mount
Everest recently.
Included in the probable guests are Fergie"Jenkins,
a native of Chatham who has a long and distinguished
pitching career, mostly with the Chicago Cubs, Con -
ridge Holloway and Pat Stapleton.
The Timmys at the first two local dinners in 1974
and 1975 Malcolm MacDonald and Dan Altan will be
here along with the local Tammy Christine Easterbrook
who has served in their capacity for the past two years.
Ontario's Lieutenant Governor John Black Aird will
be at the head table and a former chairman Frank Gif-
fin who is now in special services with the Ontario Pro-
vincial Police is also expected.
Despite the rise in the cost of living, the prices for
the dinner have not changed. They are $30 for adults
and $20 for students and may be purchased from any
member of the local Lions.
All proceeds will go the Ontario Society.for Crippl-•
ed Children and the Thames Valley Children's Centre
in London. A portion of the cost of the ticket may be us-
ed- for income tax purposes. • ,
Get your tickets early. Here's a golden opportuni-
ty to not only aid a good cause but have about four hours
of excellent entertainment and also good food.
Old Timers still flying
The more than 10,000 fans attending a recent old
timers hockey game at the Joe Louis arena in Detroit
were treated to puck action the way it was played a few
years ago. -
The Detroit Reg Wings Alumni edged the National
Hockey League Masters by a score of 5-4 thanks to four
straight goals in the second period. _
The game was played in two 25 mir}Ute periods and
the fans were kept on their toes throughout as most of
'the veterans showed more than flashes of their oldtime
brilliance.
While Rogie Vachon and Wayne Thomas were stop-
ping pucks for the Masters, the attack into the Detroit
end was led by Yvan Cournoyer, Bobby Hull, Phil
Esposito, Pete Mahovlich, Eddie Shack and Dean Pren-
tice while Harry Howell was a standout on defence.
The Detroit lineup included fellows like Bill Gadsby,
Roy Edwards, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Normie
Ullman, Frank Mahoivlich and Johnny Wilson.
Former Red Wing broadcaster Bud Lynch who is
now the team's publicity director did the play-by-play.
Another all star test
. Saturday's Western Junior 'D' all star game in
Lucan was a very exciting and high scoring game which
kept the 500 or so fans on their toes.
This Saturday night should be no different as the
' South Huron allstargame is scheduled for the Hensall
arena.
The South Huron all stars featuring the best from
the Hensall Sherwo6ds, Exeter Mohawks, Zurich
Buckeyes, Centralia Marauders and Centralia College
Saints will take on the North Oxford all stars.
The game gets underway at 8 p.m. and spectators.
are ensured an exciting contest: Calibre of play is high
in the two leagues this year as they met during the first
half of the season in an interlocking schedule.
The Ilensall Sherwoods hosting the special event
this year are leading the South Hum loop with only one
loss to date. The Exeter Mohawks are close behind hav-
ing suffered only three defeats.
Football year round
With the establishment of the new United States
football league, the television airwaves will be filled
each week of the entire year by flying pigskins.
The new league will get into action shortly after the -
January 30 Super Bowl and will continue well into July
when the CFL teams come out for practice. Then it's
the NFL and barring any strikes this year football
widows can be assured of a full 12 months of the year
isolation from their football supporting husbands.
NFL owners are hoping the fans, of all teams will
come back for the 19M'season. After the strike which
went on for more than 50 days, most teams found their
stands a lot less than filled. •

Hawks
With the season heading in-
to the home stretch, the Ex-

not making the playoffs for
the first time in the team's re-
cent history.

now find themselves three
points behind the fourth -place
