Times-Advocate, 1981-05-27, Page 19Centennials are frustrated Frustration was on the minds of all the Exeter Centennial soccer players after they lost 6-2 to Grand Bend Sunday afternoon. It was an afternoon where Exeter couldn't buy a goal. Exeter dominated most of the game, but, ended up with the short end of the score. The Grand Bend team turned in fine defensive ef- forts with the Grand Bend goalie being spectacular on close in situations. When the opportunity arose the Grand Bend forwards were successful in beating the Ex- eter defense and goalie. The game opened up with numerous changes for the Exeter forwards, hitting the crossbar and goalpost on different occasions. Grand Bend scored the first two goals before Shawn Rotteau found the mark near the end of the first half on a close in shot. Grand Bend scored one more to end the half at 3-1 for Grand Bend. The second half was much the same as the first with Exeter passing and Grand Bend capitalizing on their opportunities. Grand Bend scored three goals before Paul Vanderwal, with a goal mouth scramble scored what first appeared to have hit the goal post but had caught the inside of the post to end the game at 6-2 for Grand Bend. Things have got to turn around for the Centennials in the future with the next game against Taxandria Falcons next Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Arkona. i1e ITCHY NITERS WIN — The Itchy Niters were runnersup to the xeter egion mixes •art leaaue championship. We are now in the process of interviewing staff for summer programs. Once our staff has been selected, registration dates will be set up and announced through this article. Thank you's go out to Ian Russell, Donna Glanville and Mrs. Hern who have volunteered their services to coach the pee wee and bantam girls teams this season. These minor ball coaches deserve a lot of credit as many hours are taken up with practices, games, phone calls and driving players to and from games. Other coaches and helpers this year are, Randy Stanlake, Bob Snell, Bob Watson, Bruce McLean, Ron Morrison and Andy McIntyre. A tip of the hat to all of you and also to those wives who very often share coaching duties with their husbands. An application was made this summer for a grant to hire four staff to do clean-up and repairs in parks and on roadsides through -out Stephen township. I am sorry to say that our application was turned down, but I would like to thank all those who were interested in the positions and wish them luck with other prospects for summer employment. From Dashwood Workshop Heading for Olympics Dorothy Daklns of Arc Industries In Dashwood has qualified to compete in the National Special Olympics to be held later this summer in Ottawa. Dorothy who resides in the Group Home on John Street in Exeter won a first prize red ribbon and two second place finishes in a recent qualifying swimming competition in Kincardine. She compiled the best time in the 25 metres butterfly event and was second in the front crawl and back crawl classifications. Ontario is divided into 12 divisions and the local swimmer will represent Region 4 in the Special Olympics to be held in the nation's capital from July 16 to 19. Paul Runnalls in charge of the athletics program at Dashwood said lack of practice facilities for swimming was a problem for his athletes. He added, "Dorothy only had two practices at Vanastra before she qualified at Kincardine. With the help of our swim coach Bonnie Baynham I expect Dorothy's training program will become much more intensified before she heads for the Ottawa competition." Five swimmers represented Dashwood in the Kincardine meet. Jim Johnston of Huron Park was second in the 25 metres breaststroke. Runnalls added, "Our floor hockey team just ended their season and now we are getting ready for soccer and track and field. We need volunteers as driver and coaches and could use more equipment." Some sticks and helmets for the floor hockey team were provided by Special Olympics Incorporated. ARC employees purchased their sweaters. Assistance has also been provided by the Pizza Train and the Exeter Kinsmen club. It is hoped to operate a soccer tournament in this area during the summer months. A track and field meet is set for Palmerston on May 30. Qualifying runs have been held at South Huron District High School with the Motocross returns Exciting Motocross race action returns once again to Hully Gully this Sunday May 31, with over 254 participants from across Ontario com- peting for trophies as well as over $1500 worth of Honda contingency money. A special added feature for this weekend's race will be an exhibition of BMX (Bicycle Motocross). Interested participants are advised to contact Randy Collins at 262-5809 or 262- 3318. All children attending the Motocross will have a chance to win a 1981 Hully Gully dirt bike valued at over 8700. Heats will begin at 11:30 and finals will be in at 2:30. BMX Bicycle Motocross, a new sport that has taken off with such success south of the border, will be exposed to sports fans in Western Ontario this weekend at Nulty Gully. Hully Gully Raceway, the promoter of amature motocross to its current level in this area, has decided to offer a BMX program to young cyclists in Western Ontario. The size and the extent of this program will depend on the amount of interest generated by this weekend's Cowgirls win in first game The Crediton Cowgirls started the 1981 area fastball league season on the right foot Monday with a 21-3 vic- tory over Biddulph. The Cowgirlsscored eight runs in each of the first and third innings. Deb Lord was the winning pitcher allowing only two runs in the first in- ning and one run in the se- cond inning for the whole game. Scoring three runs each for Crediton were Carol Stuart, Brenda Wilds, Tam- my Regior, Sandy O'Neill and Shelley Weber. Thursday the Cowgirls will play Denfield at Arva, Friday they are at home to Lucan, Sunday it's back in I.ucan at 7 p.mand then again at home on Monday night at 9 p.m. No two issues are so far apart that a politician can't nnnnntnnnHntttltttHtltttttttttltttlttltlltttttNtttlllltlll"ItunnnnnnnmHnmmmtnnnnnl straddle them. 1 exhibition.
