Times-Advocate, 1981-05-27, Page 17Jack Burghardt guest of PUC Times -Advocate, May 27, 1981 Page 17 National communication will improve Canadian Unity The communications of Canadian unity was the topic as Jack Burghardt, newly - elected MP for London West, addressed the spring meeting of district 7 of the Ontario Municipal Electric Association. (OMEA). The meeting was hosted by the Exeter Public Utilities Commission at the Legion Hall, Wednesday. History shows, Burghardt said, to retain its vitality and progress a nation must have dialogue. Communication, on a national level, is im- portant as we, must be in touch with each other and listen to other's points of view. The crisis in Canada today is due not only to self interest and self concern, but also to a narrow view of regionalism, the former CFPL-TV anchorman said. There is no spirit of co- operation and this creates rigidity not flexibility of attitudes. Often he said, the only hearing in communication is on a basis of confrontation. Provincial patriotism violates the needs of national justice Burghardt charged. There is however, a need for all kinds of opinions the MP said. The problem is not solvable by 10 separate units (provinces) squabbling and people in politics need help from everyone. Canada has a proud heritage founded by "ar- chitects of freedom with grand visions". He said we must continue to ask our- selves, "what kind of a country do we really want?" Burghardt stressed that we must develop a national outlook and not worry so much about our own com- plaints. "We must convince ourselves," he said, "we have our destiny in our hands." Burghardt's comments as guest speaker topped the evening's speakers but also cut short a debate forming on the future of electricity in Ontario. OMEA president Jim Collins said a second power - line was needed to carry electricity from the nuclear generating station at Douglas Point. The Bruce 13 station will be ready to supply power by 1983 he said, but without a second power -line, the energy would be "locked -in" at the station. To avoid possible blackouts in the future, the line should be built. He said government red tape was one of the reasons for the hold up. Collins urged OMEA members to contact their provincial members of TOP RATES FOR TERM DEPOSITS 30 Days — 15 % 90 Days — 161h % 1 Year -- 16% 2-5 Years -- 151/2 % Come in and see us - Let us explain our Term deposits vices to you. and other ser - Clinton Community CREDIT UNION,,. 374 Main St. Box 126 Exeter, Ont. Huron -Middlesex MPP, Jack Riddell, said the provincial Liberals were behind the OMEA 100 per- cent. But he went on to speak about the Liberal's support of an OMEA resolution to Ontario Hydro requesting Hydro put con- servation op an equal footing with supply in terms of development and costs. He said the Liberals are putting an "honest effort forward to support the OMEA resolution.” Riddell noted the govern - ment was waiting on an environmental impact report on the second Bruce line. Murray Cardiff, MP for Huron -Bruce, said everyone agrees the new energy lines are necessary. "Most people feel the lines are great," he said, "as long as they run over somebody elses property. Cardiff reminded the members the nuclear station was not in the Huron -Bruce riding, but any new power lines from the station would affect the area. A representative from Ontario Hydro, George Burnette, said that from looking at the men at the head table, he knew enough to shut -up and sit down. Exeter PUC chairman Murray Greene welcomed the assembly and introduced the head table. Commission member, Exeter Mayor Bruce Shaw stressed the advantage Ontario has in the variety of sources of electricity the province can use, in his welcome from the town. Approximately 65 PUC members and employees from area utilities attended. Each was presented with a bag of produce supplied at cost or donated by local producers and companies. It will be advertised in newspapers and on television and radio. It will be displayed on bank counters, on wall posters in offices, post offices and stores. "June 3 is Census Day. Count yourself in." Beginning on May 25, Census Representatives will drop off a questionnaire at your home. You are ex- pected to complete, as of June 3, all applicable questions on the form. In larger urban areas the completed questionnaires are to be returned in the postage -paid envelope provided. In smaller centres and rural areas question- naires will be collected by Census Representatives. Householders will be advised which method applies to them. Approximately 70 percent of all the 1981 Census of Population and Housing questionnaires will be mailed back and about 30 percent will be collected. Less than one percent of the population, those in remote areas, will be enumerated by interview. About 34,000 enumerators, 1,895 commissioners or supervisors, and 191 Census Area Managers will be recruited locally to conduct the Census. Commissioners will earn 84,350 for a late - March to mid-July work contract, and enumerators will make between 85.65 and $6 an hour in May and June. "Over a four-year period from 1980 to 1984, the preparation, collection, data processing and publication of the 1981 Census is ex- pected to cost about $95 million," says Statistics Canada spokesman David Roy. This works out to about $12 per household, a saving of about 20 percent from the last major Census in 1971. The 1981 Census has been streamlined. There are 25 percent fewer questions than in the 1976 Census, and only one in five households in- stead of one in three will be required to answer the longer 46 -question form. Four fifths of households will fill out a 12 question form. By law, all information provided on the Census questionnaire is strictly confidential and can be used only for statistical purposes. Severe penalties of up to $1,000 in fines or up to six months imprisonment or both are provided for anyone Columba to judge literary contest This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Dorothy Shoemaker Literary Awards Contest, originally a Centen- nial project of the Kitchener Public Library and named in • 414. • „1„,• • , s 11 'v • • e). • • • a s • • • • e • i r: fir ti. • • 1 „'"rShowcase '81 14•.' tit r Anstett Jewellers, Clinlon r( J • .e • • •• a Anstett Jewellers invites you to view a magnificent presentation of outstanding jewellery. exquisite gem stones and one -of -a -kind designs . a breathtaking. out -of -this -world collection. "The Census is important for governments, businesses, labour unions, churches and other organizations which affect the daily lives of Canadians. That is why so many organizations are making their employees, clients or members aware of the 1981 Census, to ensure that they have the best possible data to plan their undertakings," said Edward Pryor, 1981 Census Manager.
