The horse barn which was part of a controversy regar- ding the removal of the ex- isting half mile race track to construct the South Huron Rec Centre was moved to the country. • It now stands on the property of Jack Parsons about two miles west of Ex- eter on Highway 83. For moving, the building was cut in half and the roof removed. Parsons said, "With my loader and the help of Ivan Webber it went together beautifully." The barn on the Parsons farm is now the home of 15 pacers and one trotter and is a busy scene most mornings as the seven owners are out to give their horses the proper training. Some Sun- day mornings the yard is full of cars according to Par- sons. Adjacent to the barn is a regulation half mile training track which provides race like conditions. It is 36 feet wide and is able to accom- modate four horses wide. The soil conditions are almost ideal for a racing track said Parsons. He add- ed, "There is a sandy bottom with four to six inches of light. fine gravel above. It drains very quickly. We can use the track about 15 minutes afte4• a`rdin. He continued, "The only bad time we have might come in the spring when the water table from the Ausable River is high. In summer, actually more rain the better. A ditch runs right around the track and the drain outlet is to the south end of the property." Jack Parsons with Hi Lea Ray owned by Keith Coates Area racing owner and enthusiast Keith Coates said, "It's an ideal spot put in the country for training and I am sure glad it's here." Coates added. "The track at the Exeter fairgrounds was one of the best around. It had tremen- dous turns." Parsons added. Snow blowing in the winter time is a big expense we have along with the gravel and dust for the track. We usually put on about 80 tons of stonedust ti year at a depth of one inch." Keith Coates has five horses now in training at the Parsons farm. They include Hi Lea Ray. Hi Lea Sue. Hi Lea Billy. Cheyenne Springer and Vi's Image. Cheyenne Springer is a half brother to JC Grit who was purchased recently by the partnership of Dave Morrissey and Peter Oud and is racing at the Meadowlands under the tutleage of trainer John Campbell. Jim Taylor of Hensall has Jaydee Lonesome. Miss Kel- ly Rose and Lotto Scram in addition to a broad mare Jaydee Duster at the Par- sons track. Lotto Rum. Lotto Tax and a two year-old by Native Lobell are owned by Gary Birmingham of Exeter. Others at the training base are April Melody owned by Gord McDonald, Har's Boy owned by Har Brintnell of Exeter. a colt owned by Gerry Schenk of Crediton out of MacPhone and a trotter for George Smith of Exeter. Parsons has three horses of his own in training. They are Knight A Gone. Colleen's Babe and Sparrows Toro. A six stall addition is planned by Parsons probably in 1982. 1 it I It EUIUHW.' 11" t .I AO ur•Gain beef production.
