Close finish features old pigeon races
The second old -bird race
held by the Lucan Homing
Pigeon Club provided one of
the closest finishes ever
recorded. Adam Bratscher
of Bryanston and Al DeHaan
of Exeter entered birds in a
race flown in conjunction
with about ten other clubs in
South western Ontario.
At 8 o'clock last Saturday
morning the birds were
released at Stouffville,
Ontario. Bratscher clocked
his first bird at 11.01.53,
while the DeHaan bird was
timed in at 11.05.57.
At first glance the Brat-
scher bird might seem an
easy winner. However, the
distance from Stouffville to
the Bratscher loft is 188.955
km whereas the DeHaan
bird had to fly 193.194 km to
get home.
When the respective flying
times were divided into the
distances, the DeHaan bird
had made an average speed
of 1038.96 meters per minute,
while the Bratscher bird flew
at 1038.88 meters per minute,
a mere difference of .08 m or
8 centimeters per minute.
This means that the
DeHaan bird for eveny
minute it flew gained t'lcin on
Bratscher's bird.
Figured over the entire
flying time of 3 hours, 5
minutes and 57 seconds, the
DeHaan bird had gained
892.56 meters, or less than
