FARMER OF THE WEEK
DINETTE, MARGARET, CINDY AND MIRIAM STEFFENS AND WEANER PIGS
A Centralia '-area hog
producer who started into
the business of farming 15
years ago with seven sows
along with one cow expects
to produce 2.000 weaner pigs
during the next year.
Herman Steffens who
along with his wife Joanne
and four daughters operates
150 acres at Lot 8, Conces-
sion 3 in Biddulph township
now has 100 sows.
He has been producing
about 1.800 pigs each year,
but. with new barn facilities
with controlled
temperatures hopes to in-
crease that number by about
200 per annum.
Currently 1,200 weaner
pigs are being sold to Quality
Swine with the remaining
600 being finished for
market.
Steffens is just completing
pens in a 96 by 32 foot barn
built in 1975 and will be able
to keep temperatures for the
sows at the ideal Celcius
temperature of 21 to 22.
Cooler temperatures are
better for finishing the
animals to the market stage.
A native of Holland,
Steffens came to Canada in
1961. He spent the first year
on a farm in Alberta and
then moved to the Kirkton
area where he worked for
Jack Switzer until buying his
present farm in 1966.
When he bought the Bid-
dulph township farm it con-
tained one barn which has 12
cow stalls. four pig pens and
two open pens.
A finishing barn of 36 by 52
feet dimensions was con-
structed in 1972. For a few
years pigs were also housed
on the second floor of the
original barn.
Steffens said, "Because of
a much better environment I
hope to have earlier
weanings and they should
grow faster allowing for an
increase in production."
A liquid manure pit was
also built in 1972 with the
finishing barn.
Most of the feed needed
for the Steffen animals is
home grown. lte said, "I
usually have about 90 acres
of corn and this along with
some barley takes care of
my feed needs except of
course for concentrates and
vitamins."
An additional 50 acres
were purchased in 1980
bringing the total to 150
acres. The original 100 acres
were systematically tiled in
1975-76 with the new 50 acres
tiled shortly after purchase.
Steffens said he would not
be increasing the number of
hogs he %%wild be finishing
for market. Ice added, "If I
did that I wouldn't be able to
do all the work myself. The
ratio of weaners and
market pigs I have now
seems to be working out
okay."
Justifying his method of
keeping some weaners right
through to market Steffens
said. "The people I sell the
weaners to appear to be do-
ing okay so I might as well
keep as many as I can."
Steffens is involved in a
number of community ac-
tivities. He was president of
the Middlesex Federation of
Agriculture for two years
and is currently president of
the PTA at Our Lady of
Mount Carmel Separate
School
