AUCTIONEER: Richard Badley PROPRIETOR: Richard Lobb Clinton 482-7898 T Or Pioneer log cabin discovered, will be leaving Grand Bend This little house will soon be moving to a new prairie. Grand Bend will be losing what is probably its oldest 'betiding this summer, when a pioneer log cabin Is taken from the Manore Marine property and moved to a new site. Owner Dick Manore put a "for sale" sign on the cabin last fall, and yid he would let it go for a rminal fee, if someone would just take it away so that he could use the land it's sitting on. -=He found an interested buyer this spring, and ex- pects that the cabin will be gone by the end of the summer. The new owner plans to number the logs, and take the cabin apart log by log to move it. Manore dtimates that the house was built in the 1860's. The cabin is perched on the river bank along Sauble Road, adjacent to the marina building. Manore purchased it about a year ago, when the former owner Ed Devine moved to a nursing home. At that time, Manore didn't know it was a pioneer log cabin. This spring he decided he would like to have the land vacant, and asked some of his employees to tear it down. Wayne Kapitaniuk started pulling off the bright green siding, and found the pioneer style cabin un- derneath. Another Manore Marine employee Dennis Snider decided to find out what he could about the obviously old cabin. He talked to long- time Grand Bend resident Hank Green who said that his grandfather once owned it. Green agreed that the cabin must be about 120 years old. Manore's employees com- pleted the task of pulling off two layers of siding, and found the old timbers to be in good, solid condition. It is built of squared off timbers, and the corners are tightly dove -tailed. The cabin is 18 feet by 22 feet big, and has a second floor. It is built into the side of the old river bank, and has a basement under the back part, while the front door is level with the road. A narrow stairway leads up to the second storey. Manore speculates that originally the cabin would have been built on stilts at the back. Later, over the years, the cement founda- tion and basement was put under it. Just as the siding had covered the logs on the out- side, a kind ofwall board, and layers of wall paper hid the logs inside. When he realized the cabin was probably of historical significance, Manore offerd it to the Lambton Heritage Museum. However, they declined it, saying that they already had a building -of similar construction, and due to limited space, they prefer to only take one struc- ture of a kind. Beause no one has lived in the cabin for more than a year, Manore has removed the electrical wiring. It did .not have plumbing, but simply a pump at the kitchen sink and an outhouse behind. Manore jokingly says he'll let the outhouse go with the cabin as a package deal. Both Manore and Snider say they are very impressed with the solidness of the timber, and the way the cabin is constructed. Manore pointed out that the second storey floor was firm ly built into the wall of the cabin, demonstrating the know-how of the builders. "A lot of work and a lot of thought went into it," Manore says. He stressed the difficulty of erecting such a building without today's equipment. Manore thinks that originally the cabin was built as a farm house, and the owner farmed the low land along the river where his marina now exists. The 4 sz - Vit`'"%tse' r=; DISCOVERY OF A LOG CABIN — Manore Marine employee Wayne Kapitaniuk works with a crowbar to remove siding from a pioneer log cabin, believedtohave been built in about 1860. The cabin is to be removed from the Grand Bend location. Staff photo GB council Continued from page 19 the sewers are operational. Cam Haist was hired as dock master. He held the position last summer. Council approved a re- quest from John Colohan to move a walkway from his property to village property. Council approved to sign for Mad Mad's Variety. The shop will be in Bob Torrington's board walk. Council received a letter from the town of Forest ask- ing them to prepare a baseball team for a match June 29. The letter said that dignitaries would umpire the game. and soft drinks would be served afterward. Many municipalities are asked to take part. Green was very enthusiastic, and said he would look into the possibilities of forming a team.
