New approaches
for learning needs
Women in rural areas are
beginning to develop new
and innovative approaches
to meet their specific
learning needs. From
Thunder Bay to the Ottawa
Valley, women on their own,
or in cooperation with
various colleges, govern-
ment agencies or other
organizations, are creating
educational programs or
learning experiences which
are tailored to meet the
needs of rural women.
The Ontario Congress on
Learning Opportunities for
Women, in cooperation with
the University of Western
Ontario presents a weekend
conference, "The Rural
Connection" to be held in
London May 8, 9 and 10, 1981.
This will be the first at-
tempt in Canada to deal with
the special educational
needs of women from rural
areas on such a large scale.
During the conference,
women will participate in
workshops and hear
presentations on such topics
as: how to find resources in a
small community; where to
find funding for programs;
how to organize their own
learning opportunities
around local areas of con-
cern; how to utilize nearby
colleges, governments,
educational institutions and
organizations; how to form
networks with other women
in isolated areas; how to
determine learning needs
and goals.

Sheep testing
on the rise
The federal -provincial
Sheep Record, of Perfor-
mance Program registered
another strong increase in
1980., The total number of
lambs tested rose to 43,000
from 33,000 in 1979.
In the 100 -day weight
category Hampshire sheep
led the 17 breeds tested for
the second year in a row.
The 1,338 Hampshires
tested last year had an
average weight of 42.5 kg. at
the 100 -day mark, compared
with 40.1 kg. for Suffolks.
Suffolk: accounted for
one-quarter of all animals
tested. and had a high
lrolificacy rate of 1.66
ambs born to each ewe per
year.
In addition to the super-
vised weighing done on
farms. Agriculture Canada,
and the provincial
governments, operate seven
ram test stations across the
country. True genetic
differences of the rams can
be compared at these
stations because feeding and
management are uniform.
Last year there were 800
rams tested. In 1981 the total
is expected to increase by
about 300 animals as two
new testing facilities come
on stream, one in Arkell,
near Guelph, Ont., and the
other in Saskatoon, Sask.
When the Sheep Record of
Performance Program was
launched in 1976, there were
100 breeders enrolled, with a
total of 6,000 sheep on test.
By 1980 the numbers had in-
creased to 875 breeders and
43.000 animals on test.
Charles Lalonde, chief of
sheep performance testing
at Agriculture Canada, says
there is plenty of demand for
more performance -tested
breeding stock because the
sheep industry in Canada is ,
growing rapidly.

Committee for
export potentials
Don Henry, Past Presi-
dent of the Ontario Pork
Congress, announced today
that a recent General
Meeting of the congress ap-
proved the set up of a com-
mittee to initiate export
potentialsdin the pork in -
Up to $50,000 of Congress
funds has been allocated for
use in 1981 with a further
commitment of up to $25,000
In each of the following two
years. This will signal the
total pork industry that a
longer term commitment Is
being made to this export
thrust.
Mr. Henry explained that
over the past eight years,
the highly successful On-
tario Pork Congress has'ac-
cumulated some excess
revenue which is now being
plowed back into the total in-
dustry. This effort is going
to benefit all aspects of the
pork industry.
A committee of past
presidents has been looking
into the matter of how best
to utilize the excess funds
and made its recommen-
dations to a General Meeting
held on Monday, March 30 in
Stratford.
The main thrust of the
Pork Congress export in-
itiative will be to act as a
catalyst to promote exports
of purebred swine breeding
stock and semen, Canadian -
manufactured equipment
used by the pork industry,
feed products and premix-
es, processed food products
and pork cuts.
To accomplish this, a
small group of represen-
tatives from all segments of
the pork industry has been
appointed to develop specific
programs and work out
details. Working closely
with representatives of the
Export Development Agen-
cy of the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food,
Canada Department of -
Agriculture, and Federal
Trade and Commerce, the
congress hopes to have
specifics in place prior to
this year's Ontario Pork
Congress being held in Strat-
ford, Ontario on June 23, 24
and 25.
