Observe 50th anniversary of founding
Times -Advocate, April 22, 1981 Page 7
Sorority chapters plan
Beta Sigma Phi sorority
has grown in its 50 -year
history from one chapter of
seven women to a sorority of
250,000 women active in
chapters in 32 countries
throughout the world.
Life, learning and friend-
ship are the bywords of Beta
Sigma Phi. Begun in the
midst of the depression by
Walter W. Ross, Beta Sigma
Phi was originally designed
to provide an outlet for
women who, in those hard
financial times, could not
attend college and were
obliged to remain home and
support their families.
Walter Ross provided these
women with a program of
cultural study so they could
have a chance at intellectual
and social growth.
From the first chapter
formed in Abilene, Kansas,
Beta Sigma Phi has grown
from a small social and
cultural group into an in-
ternational sorority that
devotes much time to service
efforts as well.
Hardly a charitable,
health or cultural group
exists to -day that has not
been helped in some way by
Beta Sigma Phi. Inter-
nationally, the chapters have
created several special
funds to which they con-
tribute: the International
Loan Fund, through which
members help each other;
the International
Endowment Fund, which has
donated over a million
dollars to health research
groups, homes for un-
derprivileged children and
many other causes; the
Exemplar Fund, which helps
support Literacy Village in
India; and a college
scholarship fund for
members or their sons and
daughters.
The upcoming Founders
Day celebration will be held
April 28 at the Masonic Hall
in Exeter. The anniversary
will be observed by the three
chapters in Exeter and by all
chapters around the world.
The first local chapter was
organized by Irene Beaupre
in 1947. Irene belonged to
Beta Sigma Phi in
Washington when she
worked there during the
Second World War.
The first chapter was
named Alpha Pi and had 26
members. Irene Beaupre
was installed as the first
president with vice-
president Margaret Melville,
recording secretary - Marion
Bisset, corresponding
secretary - Ruth Hess and
treasurer - Norma Wilson.
Mrs. F.A. May and Mrs. F.J.
Milner were invited to be the
first chapter's sponsor and
director.
Although there is an
emphasis placed on social
and cultural activities the
main thrust of the sorority is
its social service. Right
from the beginning members
started to work for the
betterment of the com-
munity.
The first large project was
to clean up and beautify
Victoria Park on Huron
Street. Since then they have
added swings, slides, sand
boxes and installed a wading
pool. For many years the
sorority has donated a
scholarship at South Huron
High School.
A room was furnished at
the hospital, a heated crib
and other articles that were
needed at later dates. A baby
sitting course was sponsored
by the group, also a blood
donor clinic,
The Block Parent program
was initiated and daffodils
for cancer are sold each year
plus many more projects.
The second chapter was
formed in 1970 with 25
members ready for ad-
mittance into an Exemplar
chapter. This chapter was
named Xi Gamma Nu. A
third chapter was formed in
1977 with 14 members ready
for the Preceptor Degree.
This chapter was named
Beta Theta.

And this has a market value
of about $6 million.
Production begins in
December, when the
cucumbers are started from
seed. By January or
February, the young shoots
are ready for planting, and
by March the harvest
begins. The cucumbers are
picked in the cool of the mor-
ning and then automatically
wrapped in plastic to protect
their delicate skin. They are
then shipped to retail stores
within a day or two. All
greenhouse cucumbers are
sold fresh. none are process-
