Though originally planned as outdoor furniture, the company's brochures claim it "virtually controls the out- door and leisure furniture market in the U.S." The fur- niture is now used in homes, hotels, at golf courses and even in business reception areas. Prices range from 1117 for a dining chair, to 1193 for a bar chair to $297 for the por- table bar itself. The prices are very favourable Courtney said, when compared with other good quality leisure fur- niture. "Consumers are becom- ing more and more con- scious of quality," Courtney said. People will spend more money he explained, if they have a product that will do the job for them. Unlike other metal fur- niture. the Leisure Pipe product requires little if any maintenance. The furniture is resistant to sun and weather and pool chemicals and never needs painting. As well as helping expand the operation. the Hyde Park showroom has shown a favourable consumer reac- tion. Product sales totaled over $80,000 for May to September of 1980. Times -Advocate, April 22, 1981 Page 5 DENTURE THERAPY CLINIC E. J. The obvious joke — a plumber's nightmare — comes to mind. But this is more like a plumber's early retirement to the south, with his method of using up remaining stocks. Leisure Pipe Products Limited, Grand Bend, has developed a number of leisure furniture products based on the use of specially extruded white A.B.S. plastic. Doug Courtney is presi- dent of Leisure Pipe, but he also runs Wheeling -By Stables. The Leisure Pipe manufacturing plant is located just off Highway 83, in what was once a horse stable. A table saw and a rack to store the uncut lengths of tubing, are the bulding's only obvious changes. Hundreds of funiture com- ponents are stacked in the barred horse stalls. Courtney explained they had been building com- ponents all winter to assem- ble and market finished fur- nitute for the summer seas&n. , Courtney first became in- terested in the product while spending the winter at his winter home in West Palm Beach. The furniture has been popular in Florida for about four years. On his return from Florida last year, Courtney began to look for a Canadian supplier of the A.B.S. pipe which was specifically developed for leisure funiture use. The furniture is "resistant to virtually everything," Courtney said. The plastic was developed by Monsanto and is extruded PORTABLE BAR — Martin Van Den Boomen of Leisure Pipe's Hyde Park showroom models the portable bar and bar chairs. The furniture was developed by Leisure Pipe Products Limited of Grand Bend. The furniture is made up of pipe and fittings specially extruded of A.B.S. plastic for leisure furniture use. by a Montreal company. It is impervious to the effects of sunlight and moisture. Well suited to the moist salt airs of the Florida climate, it soon became pop- ular as leisure furniture in other areas, The chair cushions are made of vinyl -coated polyester called "Tex- tilene". Similar material is used in the slings between the pipe to support the cushions. Complimenting chairs and lounges are fiberglass - topped tables. with pipe structures as legs. The line even includes a portable bar, with bar chairs or stools, and a wheeled ser- ving cart. A matching umbrella will complete the traditional patio table and chairs. Courtney said the wholesale marketing of the Leisure Pipe furniture really only began this year. A showroom in the Hyde Park plaza was opened last year as a prototype. The Canadian attitude to the quality and the price of the product has been good, Courtney said. There are now 40 dealers across Canada, mostly in southern Ontario. Courtney said there are dealers in Calgary, Edmonton and Brandon to the west, and stores carry the Leisure Pipe line in St. John's and Moncton to the east. Courtney expects to have 60 to 75 dealers within JACK'S Small Engine Repair Service HOMELITEwoo Franchised Service Centre for • Briggs and Stratton • Tecumseh • MTD Products • Homelite Products 107 Queen St. Summer Hours May 1 - Sept 1 Mon -Fri 8drn-9pn1 Sat 8 -Noon HOMELITE Sales and Service • Chainsaws • Lawn Trimmers • Water Pumps • Generators Hensall 262-2103 •••••••••••••••••••••• PRINCEVILLE • • Oak Bedroom • • • triple dresser with • doors and drawers, • vertical mirror, cedar • lined armoire, 60" • headboard reg.
