Pee wees win consolation
The Exeter pee wees
duplicated the effort of the
local atoms when they
skated off with the con-
solation medals in the
Shamrock "B" tournament
played in Lambeth, Sunday.
The locals were pushed to
the consolation side when
they dropped a 4-1 verdict to
Port Stanley in their opener
and they beat Dorchester 5-1
to bring home the medals.
Sean Whiteford paced the
victory with three goals and
one assist. Jim Lewis had the
other pair of tallies. Tim
Moore added two assists to
the scoring totals and singles
were recorded by Bob Sims
and Ted Lawson.
In the loss to Port Stanley,
Whiteford had the lone
Exeter goal on a play with
Sims.

Exeter Legion continued its
winning ways Saturday and
now qualifies to participate
in the Provincial Command
finals in Oshawa on April 4.
In January, the Exeter
team won the C1 tourney and
Saturday they finished
second in district playoffs
held in Clinton.
The locals were led by
Pres Lavier who amassed a
total of 1,330 points in
fivegames and his high one
game score qualifies him for
the Command single
championship.
Other members of the
winning team are Marvin
Bower, Gary Lavier, Clay
Murray, Jack Fuller and Al
Flynn.

"We still look at ourselves
as underdogs, but the kids
came to realize they could
play with these teams. This
game today, win or lose will
make a big difference in our
program."
The Panthers' lack of
playoff experience showed
against Central, but neither
South Huron players or their
fans gave up. The Panthers
were outscored 18-6 in the
second quarter to trail 31-18
at the half, but re-entered the
packed gym to a standing
ovation.
They got another standing
ovation five minutes later
when the margin had risen to
17 points and the stands
didn't clear until after the
final buzzer sounded.
"We're just not used to
playoffs," said South Huron
star Doug Hallman, a three -
sport MVP for the third
straight year who led all
scorers with 23 points. "We
played as hard as we could,
but we were really tense at
the start and it showed."
Saturday, the locals battled
back three times to tie
Lucan, but they couldn't do it
on the fourth occasion
because that goal came in
sudden death overtime and
gave the Irish a 4-3 triumph.
Jeff Shipley was the
marksman on the winner
after three and half minutes
in the extra session with the
assist going to Lester Arts.

goals and Rick Emery the

notched the Exeter tallies
with Gould, Tiedeman and
Scott Lovie picking up the
assists.
Winger Brent Dawson was
lost to the team when he
broke his collar tone on his
first shift in the contest.
In their opener, Exeter lost
5-4 to Lambeth. They battled
back from a 3-1 deficit to
take a 4-3 lead, but couldn't
hold on as Lambeth scored
twice in the final minutes.
Steve Gould had a pair for
Exeter and the singles were
fired by Mike Tiedeman and
Calvin Stanlake. Tiedeman
added two assists and Gould
and Stanlake had one each.

Midgets lose too
The Exeter midgets failed
to salvage anything from
their Shamrock playoffs
when they dropped a 6-4
decision to Strathroy in the
"A" consolation battle at
Parkhill, Wednesday.
Strathroy took a 5-2 lead in
the game and Exeter replied
with a couple late in the
contest, but couldn't get the
equalizer and saw their
attemp fail when their op-
ponenets scored into an
empty net with three seconds
left.
Mark Vandergunst and
Dave Hayter scored for the
locals to keep the game tied
before Strathroy took their
three -goal lead. Mike Clarke
fired the pair in the last two
minutes that made the
contest close.
Dave Underwood picked
up assists on both goals by

unassisted.
