Three minor teams
get
double wins
Three Exeter minor
hockey teams posted double
victories this week as they
prepare for the upcoming
Shamrock league playoffs.
The Shamrock league will
again stage tournament -
style playoffs. The top three
teams in the northern
division will play against the
top three from the south for
the "A" title, while the
bottom three teams from
each division will meet in the
"B" playoff.
Exeter will be hosting the
atom"A" tournament this
Saturday, getting underway
at 9:OOa.m. at the rec centre.
The local atoms, however,
will be in Goderich for the
"B" championship. It is also
slated for Saturday. The
Exeter midgets go to
Parkhill for Saturday's "A;'
playoff and the novice will
compete for the "A" title in
Belmont, also Saturday.
The bantams will be in Mt.
Brydges the following week-
end and the pee wees will
travel to Lambeth on March
8.
Bantams win pair
The Exeter bantams
posted a 5-2 win over Hensall
in an exhibition game at the
rec centre, Sunday, bringing
their win total to two for the
week.
Steve Batten paced the win
with a pair of goals and the
singles were fired by Marty
Taylor, Sean Whiteford and
Scott Lovie. Steve Gould
picked up two assists in the
game and adding the singles
were Mike Tiedeman,
Whiteford, Jeff Pfaff and
Darren Vandergunst.
Randy Bilcke and Todd
Goudie scored for the
visitors with the assists to
David Skea, Tim Easter -
brook and Darren Moir.
In a Shamrock league
game, Wednesday, the local
bantams surprised Goderich
with a 3-1 verdict at the rec
centre.
Exeter opened the scoring
in the first when Steve Gould
took a pass from Steve
Batten to skate in from the
left side to put a puck
through the feet of the
Goderich netminder.
They increased the lead to
two early in the third when
both teams were playing two
men short. Scott Bogart took
a pass from Mike Tiedeman,
put a neat shift on the goalie,
and then fired the puck into a
gaping net.
Steve Batten scored
shortly after on an
unassisted effort with the
teams at full strength to put
the margin at 3-0.
Goderich finally beat Rick
Gilfillan when Peter Stahl
skated in unmolested,the
locals who were playing
without three of their
stalwarts, shut them out the
rest of the way to record
their second league triumph.
Midpest score 17
The local midgets scored
17 goals in their two wins this
week, with eight of them
coming in an 8-6 romp over
East London on Sunday.
Playing in London, Dave
Underwood scored four goals
and recorded two assists to
pace the win. The single
goals were fired by Steve
Batten, Scott Pincombe,
Mike Clark and Scott
Brintnell. Paul Smale
recorded three assists to
lead in that department and
singles were given to Scott
Batten, Jim Siddall, Dennis
McBride, Jeff Rowe, Mark
Vandergunst and Steve
Prout.
Exeter picked up 16
penalties and East London
served 15 in the chippy af-
fair.
The Exeter midgets
avenged an earlier loss to
Zurich when they pounded
the visitors by a 9-3 count at
the rec centre, Wednesday,
despite serving 12 of the 16
penalties called in the hard-
hitting affair.
Mark Vandergunst, Scott
Pincombe and Dave
Underwood fired a pair each
for the winners with the
singles going to Jeff Rowe,
Mike Clark and Dave
Hayter.
Brintnell added four
assists while Clark and
Underwood had three each.
Single assists were recorded
by Pincombe, Paul Smale
and Steve Prout.
Brian Horner scored all
three Zurich goals, two of
them on unassisted efforts.
Waxers in tourney
The Exeter novice crew
posted a 2-1 win over Mit-
chell in their first game of a
tournament in Seaforth,
Saturday, but fell to their old
nemesis from St. Marys in
the second game to bow out
of the event.
Alan Blommaert scored
both Exeter goals in the first
contest to get the most
valuable player award. Both
were unassisted efforts.
In the second game, St.
Marys scored in the second
to take the lead and then
added two insurance
markers in the third despite
the fine play of Exeter
netminder Harlen Tinney.
Tinney was named MVP in
the contest.
Sunday afternoon at home,
the Waxers scored a 3-0 win
over Parkhill. Blommaert
had another two -goal per-
formance and Robbie
McLelland picked up the
single. Mark Burton and
Todd Hunking had assists
and Tinney recorded the
shutout.

Mohawks beat Centralia in South Huron
The Exeter Mohawks
scored only one victory in
three starts this week in the
South Huron hockey league.
They started the week
right with a Monday 7-6 win
over the Centralia
Marauders. Thursday, they
dropped a 11.6 decision to the
Hensall Sherwoods and
Sunday were on the short end
of a 9-1 count to the Zurich
Buckeyes.
In the loss to Zurich, Ken
Bergman fired the only goal
for the Mohawks on a pass
from Brad Daters late in the
second period.
The Buckeyes took a 3-0
first period lead on goals by
Jeff O'Brien, Kim McKinnon
and Kerry Bedard. Assists
went to Kris Bedard, Ron
Rader and Marvin Merner.
Hitting the mark for Zurich
in the second period were
Randy McKinnon, Jeff
O'Brien, Pat Bedard and
Gerald Weido. Mike Clarke,
Kim McKinnon and Rick
Schilbe each picked up two
assists while Gerald Weido
assisted on one score.
Rick Schilbe and Mike
Clarke wrapped up the
Zurich scoring in the third
period on plays started by
Steve Bedour and Ron
Rader.
The Buckeyes took six of
the 10 minor panalties called
by referees Bill Smith and
Ron Watt.
Lose to Hensall
Thursday's game between
the Mohawks and Hensall
Sherwoods was featured by
a wild and wooly third period
in which eight goals were
scored and a rash of
penalties occurred in the last
five minutes of play.
The Mohawks scored two
power play goals in the first
period and were ahead 3-2 at
the end of the first 20
minutes.
After Dwight Consitt and
Jamie Caldwell counted
early for Hensall, Wayne
Parsons converted a pass
from Dave Jackson on the
first Exeter power play and
Ken Bergman scored on an
unassisted effort and the
score was tied.
The Mohawks went ahead
at 14:46 of the opening
session on a successful shot
by Brad Daters on a pass
from Ken Bergman with
Hensall againplaying a man
short.
The Sherwoods regained
the lead in the second period
and were never headed.
At 52 seconds of the second
period, Ken Bergman scored
again for Exeter on a three-
way effort with Larry
Bourne and Brion Penhale.
The Sherwoods bounced
back with three goals in the
next seven minutes of play
and were in front to stay.
Steve Knight, Murray
Connolly and Jamie Caldwell
were the Hensall marksmen.
Knight's score came on a
power play.
Rick Ingram assisted on
two goals while Lloyd Allan,
Gary Davies and Steve
Doublers lead
in Legion darts
The Doublers scored two
points Friday night while the
Evil Eyes could only gain a
single point in regular play
in the Exeter Legion mixed
dart league. As a result the
Doublers have widened their
first place lead over the Evil
Eyes to two points.

The recent report issued
by the Ontario Junior
Hockey League scouting
bureau lists two graduates of
the Exeter minor hockey
system.
Dave Shaw was rated as
number 19 and Tom Coates
listed as 49th on the list. Both
are playing this year with
the Stratford Cullltons junior
"B" team.
The midget draft by 011A
Junior "A" teams will he
made on May 20.
Knight each helped on one.
Rick Ingram and Ken
Varley scored for Hensall
early in the third period on
passes from Gary Kyle,
Jamie Caldwell and Jim
Ferguson.
TheMohawksretaliated on
a score by Jim Guenther on
passes from Ken Bergman
and Brad Daters before Rick
Ingram counted for Hensall
with the assist going to Steve
Knight.
Jeff Fuller fired the final
Exeter goal on passes from
Luc Gagnon and Dan Webb
at 13:24.
In the next five minutes,
Jamie Caldwell scored three
times for Hensall to put the
score out of reach of the
Mohawks.
Beat Marauders
Ken Bergman's second
goal of the game with four
minutes Left in the third
period allowed the Mohawks
to edge the Centralia
Marauders 7-6 in Monday's
action.
The Marauders moved
ahead 3-1 in the first period
on goals by Randy Somer-
ville, Rick Funston and
Perry Knee. Getting assists
were Bill Hodge, Tony
Underhill, Mark Cronyn and
Rich Lather.
The lone Exeter goal came
from the stick of Tom Ryan
with Luc Gagnon picking up
the assist.
The Mohawks cut the
Centralia deficit to a single
goal in the second period as
Luc Gagnon converted a
pass from Mike Anstett and
Tom Ryan registered on an
unassisted effort.
The lone middle frame
marksman for the
Marauders was Randy
Somerville on a three-way
effort with Perry Knee and
Pete Wuerth.
Matt Muller scored for
Centralia on a solo dash
early in the third period and
then Exeter scored three in a
row to go ahead.
Ken Bergman hit on an
unassisted effort and Jeff
Fuller fired two successful
shots in 21 seconds with Mike
Anstett and Tom Ryan
assisting.
With five minutes to go
Matt Muller hit for Centralia
on passes from Dick Lord
and Mark Cronyn to tie the
score and set the stage for
Ken Bergman's winner on
passes from Brad Daters
and Larry Bourne.
