T -A photo Vanastra centre meets needs of handicapped The International Year of the Disabled Person is now underway and the Vanastra Recreation Centre is gearing up for a very exciting year. The Centre is continuing its Special Needs program for individuals and groups who, at the present time are unable to fit into regular aquatics, fitness and recreational programs. The clientele presently includes mentally and physically disabled persons, Gummow is retiring The Middlesex County Board of Education's first director of Education and secretary -treasurer, John A. Gummow, will retire on June 30, the end of the current school year. His resignation was accepted with regret at the Board's meeting this week. Gummow, a native of West Monkton in Perth County, came to Middlesex in January 1969 when the County Board of Education was formed by the amalgamation of twenty-five township and area school boards. Prior to that time, he was a secondary school teacher, principal, and supervisory officer in North York, Don Mills, Port Dover, and Mississauga. A graduate of Stratford Normal School, the Ontario College of Education, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto, he served in the Royal Canadian Artillery and the army, Intelligence Corps. He is a past president of the Ontario Association of Education Administrative Officials and a former member of the board of Governors on the Ontario Council for Leadership in Educational Administration. As the Middlesex County Board's chief executive officer, Gummow has worked closely withTru- stees, school principals, teachers, superintendents and other employee groups in helping the Board to develop and maintain the programs and services that chat'acterize the County's • public school system today. All programs are geared as closely as possible to each individuals specific needs. As well as Special Needs programs being offered at the Centre, a community development project has been issued through government funding for a six month time period. This Outreach project will make a positive contribution to the community by providing recreation and leisure ac- tivities to individuals and groups who, otherwise would not be able to get out and participate. A large area of Huron County, bounded by Goderich, Wingham, Dublin and Exeter will be convered by the project. The success of this program would be to eventually integrate the involved individuals and groups into a regular program, where benefits of mental and physical well- Goderich gets grant A grant of $110,000 has been awarded to the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich to fund a mental health program for the benefit of people with psychiatric problems who live in southwestern Huron County. Announcing the award, Ontario Health Minister Dennis Timbrell said the money will be used to provide prevention, detection, early diagnosis and treatment services for people with psychiatric problems. The services will be of- fered from a resource centre that will be run by the hospital and that will be located in the Clinton- Seaforth area. Also to be offered are day care, out- patient, emergency, crisis intervention and outreach services. Of the total award, $35,000 applies to the period ending March 31, 1981 including capital costs of $10,000. The remaining $75,000 finances the program from April 1, 1981 to March 31, 1982.
