Times-Advocate, 1981-01-28, Page 7Crediton Insitute members learn about conservation The January meeting of the Crediton Womens Institute was held Wed- nesday night. The meeting was opened with the Ode followed by the Mary Stewart Collect. Mrs. Bruce Shapton played the piano. The roll call: Bring a craft for display and name your favorite shade tree was answered by 17 members. The minutes were read and approved. Business was conducted by Woodham UCW meet By MISS JEAN COPELAND The Woodham U.C.W. meeting was held in the church basement January 13 with an attendance of 24. The worship service was led by Mrs. John Rodd opening with a reading "New Years begins with Resolutions". Mrs. Leonard Thacker read a poem. Mrs. Lloyd Cowdrey read the scripture. Mrs. John Rodd gave the meditation and Mrs. Clarence Thomson led in prayer. Toc Alpha Conference reports were given by Stephanie Hartwick the U.C.W. delegate and Suzanne Jaques, the Sunday School delegate. Mrs. Rodd thanked the girls for their reports. Business was conducted by president, Mrs. LloydJaques opening with the U.C.W. Purpose and Function. Correspondence was read and several thank you notes read for the Christmas boxes given to the over eighty and shut-ins. All reports were given. The treasurer, Mrs. Nelson Baker gave a good financial report. Mrs. Lloyd Jaques read a poem "How to find Hap- piness through the New Year". The meeting closed with the Mizpah benediction. Personals Mr. & Mrs. Clive Abel and Mr. & Mrs. Reg McCurdy spent the weekend in Toronto and attended the N.H.L. Hockey game. These tickets were won through a draw at Bernie's Auto Service. Mr. Wallace Selves, Mt. Pleasant called on Mrs. John Butters on Thursday af- ternoon. Jason and Jeffrey McCurdy spent the weekend with Mr. & Mrs. Bob Mar- shall and Lana. The annual church meeting was held Friday evening. The evening opened with a pot luck supper and following supper the children went skating. The business meeting was conducted by Rev. Wm. Moore, super- vising minister from St. Marys United Church. Mr. & Mrs. Ted Insley were guests Wednesday evening with Rev. & Mrs. Glen Strome of London. Sunday dinner guests with Ted, Ruth and Karen were Mr. & Mrs. William Sch- wartz, and Doris, Crediton and Mr. & Mrs. Murray Insley, RR 6 St. Marys. Two of the family were celebrating birthdays. Kippen WI entertain By MRS. RENA CALDWELL Kippen East Women's Institute entertained the senior citizens of the Hensall area to dinner January 21 in the basement of Hensall Presbyterian Church. Following dinner Mrs. Robert Bell conducted a con- test. Mrs. Grace Drummond presided over the program which began with a worthwhile poem for the New Year. Roll Call was answered by telling the. name of the person who in- vited you to your first Institute meeting. A skit the "Reducing Machine" was put on by Grace Drummond and Mona Alderdice with Ruby Triebner assisting. A quilt will be put up February 3 at Grace Drummond's and anyone wanting to quilt is welcome, dinner will be pot luck. Rev. Stan McDonald gave the motto on our inability to distinguish our need from our greed. Ile said that it is a day of self, we start as chldren saying "gimme" and continue through life saying "give me" when we need to do something for others and to give our time and our talents for others. He was thanked by Rena Caldwell. Mrs. Hugh Parsons gave courtesy remarks. Everyone enjoyed a few games of bingo. Hostesses for the day were Mrs. Harold Parsons and Mrs. An Hoggarth. Mrs. Ruby Bell of the the Three Links Senior Citizens thank- ed the Institute on behalf of the Seniors and presented a gift of appreciation. president Mrs. Dave Cottell. The first euchre will be held January 28, at 8:15 in the hall. Next month the 4-11 girls will be in attendance for a pot luck supper at 7 p.m. The March meeting will be Family night held during March break on the 28th. The treasurers report was given and a pin was presented to Glenda Wuerth, a new member. The meeting was then turned over to Mrs. Cliff Kenney. Mrs. Harvey Hodgins played the piano for several songs, sang from the new song books. Mrs. Wilmer Wein read the Motto, "Nature never spoils her beauty by being in a hurry." Mrs. Peter Martin sang a solo "Master Designer". Mrs. Cora Wein read a poem entitled "Give Me Nature Indeed". Steve Lane, Ausable- Bayfield Conservation Authority Community Relations Co-ordinator provided a slide presentation on sound water management, the major aim of the authority. The Ausable Bayfield is the oldest authority in Ontario and covers over 1,000 square miles. John Sch- wint Resource Planner for the Authority then spoke on using trees, for windbreaks, errosion and water control and woodlot management. A well stocked woodlot can be as productive as the same acreage of corn. Mrs. Harvey Hodgins played a piano solo and Mrs. Martin sang "tinder The Shade of The Old Appletree". Mrs. Fern Dougal showed the ladies various decorations using pine SECOND BEST BAKERS — Tom Coates, Scott Batten and Mike Veri participated in the cake baking contest at South Huron District High School, Thursday afternoon. Birthday party Monday night a surprise Birthday party was held by the family of Della Sims in honour of her 90th birthday. The evening was spent at Mrs. Sims home viewing and reminiscing with old photos, some being 100 years old. Many gifts were received, after which she thanked everyone for the lovely surprise. A delicious lunch was served. Mrs. Sims received a plaque from MPP Jack Riddell. Saturday evening mem- bers and guests of the Crediton and District Social Club danced to the music of The Westernairs. It was a hard times dance and most • were dressed accordingly. A hardtimes lunch of wieners and beans was served.
