§47,000 pocketed from Port Stanloy beach puking
Central Elgin is parking its het on paid parking in
Port Stanley at Main Reach.
After a pilot project in summer which its parking
committee calls a success, municipal council this
week agreed to make paid parking permanent.
And the measure has also gained approval from
Port's business improvement association at an
executive sleeting on Wednesday.
Noting council's commitment to direct revenue
from parking charges to beach maintenance and
improvement, BIA president Carol Gates said that
while paid parking created challenges for some
beach businesses which need addressing, "It is a lit-
tle bit of early pain for long-term gain."
1n a report to council this week, Central Elgin's
paid parking steering committee said the pilot "was
not without a (earning curve.'
But recommending continuation, the committee
membership of which included Mayor Bill Wal-
ters, Deputy Mayor David Marr and Coun. 1)an
McNeil - reported, ,"Ihe committee considers the
pilot introduction of paid parking at Port Stanley
Main Beach in 21113 to be a success."
From Victoria 1 )ay weekend through I atbour 1)ay,
revenue from paid parking totalled $163,000. After
revenue-sharing with contractor Precise Parklink,
Toronto, which supplied ticket machines, and other
expenses including setting up parking Tots, the
municipality pocketed $47,110(1,
Money from Labour Day through 'Thanksgiving
had yet to be counted,
Main Beach with its lifeguards, public wash-
rooms and beach grooming, costs (shout $250,(XX) a
year to operate.
Revenue from paid parking was Tess than antici-
pated but the committee says poor weather was a
factor,
(fates, who owns popular (Ts Bar and (frill on
the beach with husband, Andy, agreed.
With the average summer temperature reported
as much as eight degrees off normal, she said, "You
have to remember it was 0 lousy year,
weatherwise"
'that impacted on GM.
"It was a really rough year for GIS, and we can't
blame it all on parking. It was definitely a double -
whammy."
Council on Monday directed administration to
develop a proposal for permanent paid parking, for
members to review.
'she committee did not speak to parking charges
next year. Parking in 2013 cost $2 an (lour through
the day, to a maximum $10.
Gates said the BIA recommends the charge
remain unchanged,
"We're recommending they stay the same for
next year and let people get used to (paid parking) a
little while longer."
