Wednesday, August 21, 2013 • Lakeshore Advance 11 Swimmers take on Lake Huron in the name of cancer Lynda Hillman -Replay Lakeshore Advance 'twenty swimmers took up the challenge to swim relay - style for a full day in open water to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society and the London 1 iealth Sciences Foundation. As the early swimmers cline hack in they said the continuous one -kil- ometer treks were rough due to the waves, Three swim- mers went out to swim as many one -kilometer laps as they could. Another swim- mer who would do the same would then tag them. They did this for 24 -hours. Reach for the Beach was the first event of it's kind, with participants swimming a relay track just off the shore of Grand Bend through the day and night. The event was organized by London's Jason Kloss, the youngest swimmer to cross Lake 1 luron, as a way of continuing his fight against a disease that touches so many. ()n August 26th, 2011, Jason Kloss swam the exact same 65 km route taken by ' his grandfather 20 years ear- lier. 1 le did it to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his grandfather's swim and at the sante time to honour his grandmother, a breast cancer survivor. That swim was called "kloss2cross- 4cure" and the money raised was (ionated to the Canadian Cancer Society. Wanting to build on the success of his 2011 swim, Jason decided to make the event bigger and raise more money for charity by opening it up to more swimmers. So on August 16- 17th, teams of swimmers par- ticipated in the Reach for the Beach relay swim in Lake 1Iuron to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society and the London Health Sciences Foundation.
