Sarah Palen is a local girl who is
thrilled to be tvorking close to
home.
As the new Pharmacist -owner
at (rand Bend Shoppers Drug -
mart (SDM), Palen says,
"This is a fantastic opportunity
for me. I knew 1 wanted to work
towards becoming an owner, so
when Grand Bend came up this
(avast spring 1 knew it was meant
Miro be:'
Palen, born Sarah McCann to
Larry and Barb McCann grew up
in the area and graduated from
the University of Toronto Bach-
elor of Pharmacy program in
2007. She immediately began
working for SDM, and interned in
London and was a staff pharma-
cist in Exeter before corning to
Grand Bend.
Palen knew she wanted to be
In health care but like most peo-
ple, she really didn't know what
she wanted to do when she
started university. "I knew 1
wanted to be in health care, but I
didn't know in what capacity.
During my second year of uni-
versity, I began researching dif-
ferent health care careers and 1
loved the combination of health
care and business that pharmacy
offers," she said.
Palen has only been at Grand
Bend's SDM a short time and she
says as for right now, the store
itself is staying the same. "As in
any new venture, there are
changes I would like to make
(e.g. renovations), but they take
time and 1 hope to leave the store
as it is right now until I get a bet-
ter feel for what the store and
community would benefit from
the most:'
Palen can't say enough about
the staff at this store. "I was lucky
enough to inherit this great staff,
many of whom have been with
Shoppers Drug Mart for a lot of
years. 'these people have a huge
knowledge base and are willing
to help."

She hopes to be very involved
in the community. The BBQ they
held on August 10th is just a sam-
ple of things she would like to do
within the community. "Grand
Bend has so much to offer and
being local, I would like to
become involved in as many
events and organizations as I
can. We are also partnering with
the "We Can Help Fund" run
through the Grand Bend
Community Health Centre to
raise money for this great cause."
YOURRXS
Palen says usually if they need
to contact your doctor for refills,
it can take anywhere from 24
hours to five days to hear back
from theta and not all doctors
take phone or fax refills. "If you
are completely out of your medi-
cation and we have a history of
your medications, let us know
and we may be able to speed up
the process or offer a pharmacist
renewal. Of course there are
exceptions to every rule, so there
are some instances where we
cannot offer a pharmacist
renewal, but we can explain that
on it case- by- case basis. That
being said, we should still give
the doctor a chance to respond
to our original request. "Shop-
pers Drug Mart offers delivery
five days per week. They also
offer medication reviews, weekly
compliance packaging, many
others offers and programs. They
have a full cosmetics section, a
selection of food and a photo
kiosk. They are also a pick up
location for Shoppersphoto.ca
orders. Palen says she is looking
forward to working in this com-
munity. "I have already seen the
great sense of community herr'
and hope to be a big part of that
in the future!
