Lakeshore Advance, 2013-05-29, Page 7POLICE BRIEFS 18 year old charged after motorcycle SUV crash Huron County Ontario Provincial Police OPP has charged an 18 year old female driver with an offence under the Highway Traffic Act In relation to a motorcycle and sports utility vehicle collision Sunday, May 19, 2013. Officers have determined the driver of a grey GMC Envoy made a left turn not in safety, A Harley Davidson motorcycle travelling southbound on Bluewater Highway was unable to avoid the GMC Envoy that was attempting to make a lett turn from the highway onto Turnbull's Grove Road South. The driver of the motorcycle, Wayne Mercer, 56, from Toronto and his passenger Darlene McConnell, 55, also from Toronto remain in hospital with major Injuries. The driver of the GMC Envoy, an 18 year old from London has been charged with Turn - Not in Safety. She has a court appearance scheduled at Provinclal Offences Court - Goderlch on July 23. Male charged with theft after gas drive -offs Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers have charged a 25 year old male with two counts of theft under $5,000 following two Incidents where he failed to pay for his gasoline fill up. Officers were notified of the theft on May 17, 2013. An employee at the Shell gas station located on Main Street North In Exeter witnessed the driver of a Pontiac Grand Am pump around $30 worth of gasoline and after doing so the driver took off without paying. The gas attendant recognized the vehicle and the person from an earlier gas drive off that had taken place In April. The employee provided police with a detailed suspect description and licence plate of the suspect vehicle, Officers were able to locate the male and upon questioning he admitted to both thefts. A 25 -year old South Huron man has been charged with two counts of theft. He has a court appearance scheduled at the Ontario Court of Justice - Exeter on June 27. Teen charged at Motorplex Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers have charged an 18 year old male with Assault and Impaired Driving In relation to an incident that took place at the Grand Bend Motorplex campground located on Grand Bend Line. On May 19, shortly before 6:00 a.m. officers responded to a call for aseletance from security officers regarding an erratic driver on the campground property. Security officers reported a Chevrolet Malibu was doing burnouts on the property and when they attempted to restrain the male he became assaultive. Huron County OPP officers arrived and arrested the male for Impaired Driving and Assault. The 18- year old man from LaSalle has been charged with Impaired Driving and Assault. He has a court date scheduled for the Ontario Court of Justice - Goderlch on July 15, 2013. He received an automatic 90 day driver's licence suspension. 229 speeding charges In Huron for Road Safety week Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers stopped and charged several motorists last week during the annual Canada Road Safety Week traffic campaign. The national campaign that ran from May 13 to May 20, focused on saving lives on Canada's roads. Huron County OPP officers were highly active in this campaign. Officers were busy ticketing and educating drivers on the "Big Four" causes of death and injuries on our roadways: Impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving and failure to wear or properly wear a seat belt. The Huron County OPP campaign results are as follows: 7 charged with Impaired Driving/Over 80/ Refusal, 4 Warn Range Suspensions, 229 Speeding charges, 1 Racing Charge, 13 Seatbelt charges and 8 charged for Distracted Driving. There were three collisions which resulted In Injuries, the most serious occurring on May 19, 2013.
