Colleagues praise Stratford doctor's ability
Medical colleagues and other staff at
Stratford General Hospital are in shock
and grieving the sudden death of 1)r.
Kent Sorsdahl.
A highly respected surgeon who was
well liked by his patients, Sorsdahl
passed away Thursday at home after
returning from an enjoyable trip to
Toronto with his colleague and friend
1)t•. Kevin Lefebvre and son Andrew.
"It's going to lw some rather large
shoes to fill. 1 le was quite busy and pro-
vided a great service and was very dedi-
cated to what he WUS doing," Lefebvre
said Friday.
"We're all kind of still a bit numb and
fri'taken;" he said.
The cause of death was not yet known,
he said.
I)r. Laurel Moore, chief of staff at the
1 'won Perth 1 lealthcare Alliance, said
Sorsdahl's loss is huge, not only for the
hospital but for the whole area.
Apart from his hospital duties, he ran
a large clinic in Exeter.
Ile provided a tremendous service to
the whole area, Moore said.
"1 le was really highly respected by his
colleagues, by the family physicians, by
the enlerg physicians, by his surgical
colleagues. When they had difficult
cases they would often have him assist
because of his expertise. Ile was known
to be an outstanding surgeon with
incredible judgment and just a really
talented man," Moore said.
Sorsdahl was also noted for the com-
passion and kindness with which he
treated his patients, she said.
11e had an imposing physique, but
would sit down with patients and spend
a lot of time with them.
"'that is something that really stands
out in my mind," Moore said.
"'l'lle whole hospital community is
really just in shock to the core. We can't
believe it.'this is quite a loss"
Sorsdahl attended medical school at
the University of Saskatchewan. While
interning at Plains 1 lospital in Regina,
he partnered with another resident to
produce a research paper on throat cil-
('l'1' \vllicll he ultimately presented at it
symposium in France. Ile completed
his residency in general surgery in Lon-
don, Ont., where he received awards for
excellence in both teaching and
research.
I le moved to Stratford about 17 years
ago, joining in a partnership with other
doctors here.
tie served as both chief of surgery and
medical program director of surgical
services with the 1111 IA and was instru-
mental in establishing the laparoscopic
colon surgery program at Stratford Gen-
eral, one of the first of its kind in a com-
munity hospital.
Sorsdahl had been living in
Sebringville. 11e is survived by his wife
lane and their children Andrew and
Madison.
