Examine electrlcal safety of your home New carbon monoxide
alarms last 40 /o longer
NewsCanada
(NC)—May is Electrical
Safety Month a time to encour-
age homeowners to make elec-
trical safety checks around the
house part of a regular routine.
Just because electrical wires
are not exposed, says Hydro
One, doesn't mean safety
should be forgotten. Ilere are
some important things to check
off your list this spring:
• Keep electrical cords away
from heat and water as
they can both damage the
insulation and create n shock
hazard.
• When you're changing a light
bulb, be sure to turn off the
switch or circuit.
• i'ut safety caps on any unused
electrical outlets, especially if
there are young children in the
house.
• Inspect cords and plugs. Make
it part of your routine prior to
using a tool or an appliance.
Replace electrical cords that
have cut, broken or cracked
insulation and remember to
pull the plug, not the cord to
extend the life of the cord
itself.
• Avoid octopus outlets. Clus-
ters of wires and plugs can be
a fire hazard. Extension cords
are not meant to be used as
permanent wiring, so consider
up -dating the wiring in your
home.
• If you're in the market for a
new home this spring, an
electrical inspection should
be high on your list prior to
signing on the dotted line. Not
only do you want to ensure
that the home is safe but you
also want to know upfront if
up -dates to the home's wiring
are required to bring it up to
code.

Research shows that just •10 per cent of
Canadian homes have them.
And (iuestions arise like: Who needs
a CO alarm? Where should I install it'?
When do I need to replace it'?

is not so straightforward, since differ-
ent brands have different lifespans
ranging from five to seven years. Add-
ing to the confusion are smoky alarms
which nerd to be replaced every 10
years.
Simplifying platters, safety product
market leaden' Kiddy has now updated
all its CO alarms with sensors certified
to also last 10 years. 'this technology is
the first of its kind in Canada.
