Jason and Lisa Hayter have a
plan to restore a log house 00 Gos-
hen line, north of Zurich, that no
doubt could tell tales about the
first German families to settle in
!lay Township. ihe log house was
owned by the great -great-grandfa-
ther of Gladys Bechl('r of Goderi('h
who provided information on the
property recently. The original 100 -
acre parcel of uncleared land was
purchased from the Canada Com-
pany in 1861 by three members of
`the Oesch fancily who had i►nmi-
'rated from Bavaria, Germany.
Their father John Oesch and his
wife Barbara were the first Ger-
mans to settle in Hay Township
approximately 10 years earlier. 'lhe
100 acres were split among the
Oesches - 84 acres to Merano, eight
acres to Rudolph and eight acres to
sister Barbara Oesch. Menno's
acreage changed hands a couple of
times, landing back in grandfa-
ther's John's hands in 1911. Ile and
Anna'Iheiler raised nine children
there over the next 42 years. Gla-
dys' parents, Pat and Mary
(Schwartren1ruher), lived in the
farm for :14 years and raised eight
children. The children attended SS
No. 9 Blake School. The family
attended Zurich Mennonite
Church. Gladys' father had all of
the buildings barn, shed,
pumphouse, chicken house and
Iog house - severed from the farm
land. Gladys' father had the Iog
house covered with insulhrick in
the 1940s which was later taken off
by Alec Campbell of the 'Toronto
area, once again exposing the logs
inside and out. 'the buildings were
sold to Bill Westntan from Granton
who sold to Alec Campbell who
sold to Mrs. Dallas from the Bruce -
field area. lour generations of the
Oesch family attended the Blake
school. Family gatherings and
reunions were held at the Oesch
homestead. In 2009, the property
was purchased by Jason and Lisa
1layter. Additional information
provided by the 1 lay Township l lis -
tory Book.
