Ausable Bayfield Conservation to host 40th Bannockburn Fall Hike
as one of hike events In new Healthy Hikes Challenge across Ontario
Ausable Bayfield Conservation is
one of Ontario's conservation authori-
ties offering events as part of the
1lealthy 1 likes Challenge. "Ausable
Bayfield Conservation is excited about
1 Iealthy I likes as a way for people to
have fun, get active, and improve their
physical health and their state of
mind;' saki Kate Monk, Supervisor of
Stewardship and Conservation
Lands.
One of Ausable Bayfield Conserva-
tion's healthy i likes is the Bannock-
burn Fall Hike. This popular autumn
hike is celebrating its 40th year in
2013. The fall hike at Bannockburn
Conservation Area takes place on
Sunday, October 6 from 1 - 3 p.m.
Bannockburn Conservation Area is
located between Bayfield and Bruce-
field, north of Varna, at 76249 Ban-
nockburn Line. A number of gener-
ous community partners are
supporting the Bannockburn Fall
1 like on the 40th Anniversary Year.
Participants in the I Iealthy Hikes
Challenge may take part in the
contest by visiting healthyhikes.ca
and logging time spent hiking or
walking at any conservation area in
the province of Ontario that is owned
and/or operated by one of Ontario's
36 conservation authorities. Anyone
who attends the Bannockburn Fall
I like, or another healthy 1 like event
in Ontario, can also earn 200 bonus
points.
The Bannockburn Fall I like is free
but donations are always appreciated.
The hike will provide you with a
chance to speak with conservation
staff members and hike trails. You are
encouraged to 'lug a mug,' to reduce
waste, and enjoy local apple cider.
Local apples will also be available for
a snack. For information on the Ban-
nockburn Fall Hike and other hiking
and walking opportunities, visit abca.

Ontarians can improve total health
by taking healthy I likes Challenge
Conservation authorities and their
partners have taken the first steps in a
brand new effort to get Ontarians to
improve their health - in both body
and mind - by taking a hike as part of
the Healthy Hikes Challenge. The
healthy Hikes initiative runs until
October 31. The project will highlight
the many ways our environment
boosts human health and how Ontar-
ians can energize their body and mind
simply by spending more time in
nature.
()martins are encouraged to take
the I Iealthy 1 likes challenge by regis-
tering online and then recording their
time spent hiking in the more than
270 conservation areas owned and
operated by conservation authorities
across Ontario for a chance to win
prizes. By participating in the various
events, challenge participants receive
200 bonus points for attending. There
are already close to 60 events in the
province -wide calendar, and many
more are anticipated throughout the
I ealthy hikes project. From 'brain
boost' hikes, healthy lifestyle days,
geocaching events, various guided
hikes, and a Mother's Day yoga event,
there is something suitable for every
age and fitness level, according to
Conservation Ontario. There are
$2,500 worth of prizes up for grabs for
Challenge participants, and the grand
prize, a $1,200 Merrell gift card, that
was donated by Merrell, the world-
renowned producer of trail gear
including hiking footwear.
"Evidence suggests that spending
time outdoors can provide many
health benefits including increased
energy and immunity, increased
weight loss and fitness, increased
Vitamin D production, reduction in
symptoms of anxiety and depression,
and a reduced risk of diabetes, heart
attacks, and cancer;" said Kinn Gavine,
General Manager of Conservation
Ontario, the organization that repre-
sents Ontario's 3(i conservation
authorities.
Conservation authorities collec-
tively own more than 2,5(0 kilometres
of trails, and the conservation areas
they operate help protect ecologic fea-
tures such as wetlands, forests, rivers,
and streams, and great lakes shore-
line, all of which contribute in invalu-
able ways to our overall health and
well-being. The air we breathe, the
food we eat, and the water we drink
all depend upon the health of the nat-
ural environment.
healthy I likes Challenge partners
include Conservation Ontario, Trees
Ontario, Ontario Trails Council, Bruce
'I'rail Conservancy, York Region,
Ducks Unlimited Canada, David
Suzuki Foundation, the Canadian
Mental I lealth Association, and your
local conservation authority.
"We have had amazing partners
come on board," said Gavine. "They
are hosting or partnering with conser-
vation authorities On events, promot-
ing activities, and providing some
great online resources related to the
health benefits of spending time in
nature."
