Council vote for
fluoride in the south
The fluoride debate has come back
to Lambton county, particularity the
councils and Ltunbton Shores have
voted to keep it.
The Lambton Area Water Supply
System needs a new fluoridation sys-
tem this year. It's expected to cost
about $300,000. But the LAWSS board
wants to make sure municipalities
still want to continue putting fluoride
in the water.
Sarnia City Councilor Mike Ketch
shocked councilors last Monday by
making a motion to "ask LAWSS to
cease fluoridation in the Sarnia water
system" adding people are more con-
scious of the chemicals they put in
their body now than even two years
ago. "They don't have a choice in this
case, he says. "They deserve the right
to decide what they take and when
they are taking it" says Ketch.
"This is not really about whether
fluoride is good or bad for you in my
mind; it's a simple matter of what's
our job as providers of water; to me, 1
see it as providing the purest, quality
product with the least amount of
chemical contamination that we can
put in there to make it safe to drink --
end of story,
't\vo years ago, the six municipali-
ties voted on issue, Warwick, St. (;lair
and Lambton Shores all wanted the
fluoride removed, but because of had
weather, the board voted in favour of
continuing the process.
At Lambton Shores council Martin
Underwood said there are many fami-
lies who do not have
dental plans and they need to do
everything they can to help. 'that's
okay for the people who live to
the south and are 00 the LAWS sys-
tem- but fluoride is not added at the
Lake Mimi Primary
Water Supply- so what about them?

City girl planting what she eats
Dear Editor,
This time last year, I'd never actually
grown anything I could eat. I'm a city girl,
and now I live in I luron Woods, sur-
rounded by sand and trees. Thanks to the
generous organizations and hardworking
people who supported the Grand Bend
Community Garden last year, 1 had a small
plot where I eagerly planted tomatoes,
herbs, peppers, and even a few carrots. Th
my amazement, they all grew!
I'll never forget the August afternoon
that my husband came home from the gar-
den with a big basket filled with Roma
tomatoes -so beautiful and so delicious!
(We froze some and enjoyed a taste Of
summer in midwinter.)
I want to say a special thank -you to Gar-
den Managers Walt Michielsens and Sonja
Collinet for their hard work and vision, and
to the Grand Bend

Mother's Days
Sands of Time
Lynda Hillman-Rapley
Editor, Lakeshore Advance
Itis difficult to explain the pride as a mother
and daughter after spending time with both,
early last month. Daughter Jesiqua was sched-
uled to defend her Masters thesis and she
wanted fancily by her side. My mom, whose
birthday was that day, has followed Jesiqua's
success throughout; grade eight grad, high
school, undergra(1 celebrations as well as soc-
cer tournaments and the like so it was not
unusual for her to be invited to this very
important hurdle into higher education.
I can remember some 20 years ago, in her
little jeans, yellow tee and a backpack bigger
than her, Jesiqua went off to junior kindergar-
ten, barely remembering to wave good by as
she stepped tap onto the bus and independ-
ence. l can't even describe my feeling knowing
this child had only been four -years old for a
week.
1 thought of that when for more than an
hour we sat and listened to her defend her the-
sis in front of five university professors. Mom
was listening carefully, and when a professor
didn't agree with a finding 1 thought gramma
was going to pounce- but she didn't.
We were then sent out of the room so the
Profs could discuss and eventually they called
her back in and immediately congratulated
her. Mom began to cry. Vie Profs clapped and
she cried some more. (Gramma also cried as
her grandchildren Hurry, one by one- but we
think she is just so proud.) It was touching.
Mother's Day is a favorite day for me. Many
of our friends congratulated Randy and 1 for
Jesiqua's success and of course she wondered
what we did- meaning she did all the hard
work. In our defense, I was the one who
pushed so hard and Randy told me to stop. A
great balance, in my humble estimation.
After the thesis defense the professors took
our family to lunch and it was a great time for
me to be able to talk to her two professors
about their work and their two years with our
daughter, being as independently minded now
as she was at the bus stop 20 years ago. We
had met one of them during the orientation
process and it was nice to be hack when it was
over. We had a connection because they dealt
with the trials and tribulations of higher edu-
cation from their end while 1 listened from
mine. Geoff had the same kind of "suck it up
buttercup" attitude that 1 possess while Brenda
had Randy's good nature, "let it be...11 will work
out" way.
As mothers and grandmothers, there are so
many reasons for us to be proud of our chil-
dren- so puny firsts, so many reasons to smile.
I am one of the lucky ones who can share
these events with my atom, and that gives me
reason to smile. I watch my child and my 010111
and their admiration for each other. 'They con-
tinue to laugh at me, almost like they have
their own special handshake, one only they
know.
Wishing everyone who, like me, is allotted
that opportunity to wear the badge of honour
-a wonderful Mother's day.
