colour and type of stain in an attractive
combination.
Q:1 want the natural wood gestin to conte
through on my front door, but not on the
shutters, so how do 1 vary the stains to
achieve that look?
A: You can get at least four different looks
depending upon the stain you choose. A
dear stain will allow the wood to weather
gray naturally. A toner stain delivers a slight
hint of colour as it maintains the natural
beauty of wood. A semi-trtnsparent stain
applies subtle colour that still allows the
wood grain and texture to show. A solid
stain is a rich opaque covering that also
allows the texture of the wood to show. To
save time when doing it yourself, the Olym-
pic Maximum stain -and -sealant -in -one
line is a very popular choice.
Q: How do I know when it's time
I'l let .111 1 1.11,
NI( 11()111tt 1 1111111111('
to re -stain?
A: Over several sea-
sons, weather and UV
exposure causes stain
to break down and
then it allows mois-
ture to enter the
wood. Test the ques-
tionable finish by
placing a small
amount of water on
it for a few seconds.
If, after a couple
minutes, the water
soaks in, the wood should be re -stained. If
the water droplets remain on the surface,
the stain is still effective. It's important to
determine the integrity of the stain on the
wood before recoating as different proce-
dures apply.
Q: What steps are necessary to ensure
that the stain on my deck has a long life?
A: Start by stripping off any
existing stain (a special-
ized deck cleaner is also
available from Olympic)
and then sand the sur-
, face to remove loose
wood fibers and any con-
tamination. This will
ensure that the new coat-
ing is evenly absorbed.
Make sure to follow the
product directions when
applying the new stain. )
Q: What is the one br,t
tial to snake sure my project
tunes out the way 1 want it?
A: Do a patch test. This will allow you to
see how the finish will look and give you
the opportunity to make any necessary
adjustments as to cleaning, colour, or appli-
cation method.

Germ control flooring
News Canada
(NC) - As most parents can attest infants love
to crawl around and put things in their mouth.
No matter how hard you try to stop them it's
inevitable - if they can touch it, "it" will end up in
their mouth. This is why parents are always on
guard to protect their children from germs and
bacteria lurking in their home.
Since mach of an infant's time is spent on the
floor, parents are now looking for flooring
options that will mlinimize exposure to harmful
germs, mould, mildew and bacteria. More and
more are avoiding dirt, allergen and germ
collecting options like carpet and choosing
hypoallergenic options such as natural
hardwood flooring to diminish the risk of harm-
ful exposure to their little ones.
Soint' parents are taking the extra step of
precaution and investing in flooring options that
include the application of an antimicrobial agent
to ensure even &water protection. Tllis option is
offered by some of the top hardwood flooring
manufacturers.
I lowever, one North American manufacturer,
Avant Guard Flooring, has become the gold
standard in germ p1'0te'ction for its on-line direct
premium hardwood flooring thanks to its exclu-
sive "Contour Guard" finishing technology.
"'I'o help protect our customers' hardwood
investment while also protecting their family
from harmful germs and bacteria, we've
incorporated our germ protection into all of our
flooring," said Tom Gormley, President of Avant
Guard Flooring;, who's site www.AGFlooringdi-
rect.e'olll has given consumers access to
germ -protected premium high-end tlooring they
can custom design ole -line which then gets
custom-made and shipped directly to their door
in the construction, species, grade, stall colour
and gloss level of their choosing.
Unlike other premium hardwood flooring
manufacturers, ;Avant Guard's exclusive germ
protection technology is a patented process
whereby an antimicrobial agent is applied not
only to the top but to the entire contour Of each
board, greatly reducing the propagation of
mould, germs, and bacteria in the holm'.
"We can all use a recommended floor clew
on the surface of our flooring to keep it clean
healthy, but what about the other five sides of
every board in your floor? If left unpmtected they
become an inviting breeding ground for germs
and bacteria; Gormley added. "1t just makes
gcxxi common sense that for the healthiest living
environment, and a far greater degree of protec-
tion, that tht' tell-Illaintaillal)lt' sides of every
board be treated prior to their installation:'
