Community interest committee planning for Grand Bend's future
Lynda Hillman-Rapley
When asked, a group of (rand Bend citi-
zens listed their top three visions for brand
(lend to he a community centre, ice pad and
a senior's facility.
At the last meeting for Community
Improvement Coalition, hosted by the (rand
Bend Community Foundation, members
from all walks of life talked about what they
want to see for the future of Grand Bend.
'l'he vision for the Foundation is "Caring
people collaborating to build an inclusive,
sustainable community"
'there was much discussion from this group
on what the vision is for this community.
Some thought a "senior friendly community"
wrapped it 01) as to what was needed; others
said it is the young who will visit here and
want to come hack with their families; some-
thing that has been a continued theme for a
long time.
clank Winters said when the Community
Foundation decided to organize a coalition
ii
We need to look at the long
term. I am not saying to
forget the young people, but
also look at the seniors."
Hill Fra,,eis
they had no clear idea of what would be
achieved so they planned for three meetings
followed by an evaluation and response.
'the first two meetings, said Winters, were
highly productive and constructive and "have
led us to a vision of this community's poten-
tial development"
While he said many of the seniors have
already discovered the community's pleas-
ures and benefits; the beaches and climates,
quiet neighbourhoods, community health
centre, Ifuron Country Playhouse, the art gal-
leries, the Pinery Park, golf courses, restau-
rants and volunteer organizations- others in
the group said that can also apply to what
new families and young people want. Unfor-
tunately, Many agreed, the young people do
not stick around because there are no jobs
and that became a discussion including the
idea of a virtual school such as the one they
have in Hayfield. long term seniors housing
was discussed, as it was at this group's last
meeting. Many its the forum said people
move here for so many reasons and do not
want to have to move away to the cities when
they age. 'she Community Foundation grants
approximately $70,000 per year and want to
make a difference with a focus on the future.
fiord Britton suggested a theme for this
area could he " (:orae for a visit- stay for a
lifetime." At the last meeting Peter Coleman,
representing the Optimist Club said Grand

David Campbell -executive director of
Community Foundation.
Bend needs an outside ice pad that
will be in walking distance for the
community but that can be used by
young and old. At last week's meeting
Jim Southcott said this idea could
bring people to the community year
round. Mary -Jo Schottroff -Snopko
said young people come here with
their families and eventually move
back here as adults. She said this com-
munity needs to be better ambassa-
dors, treating the visitors as guests so
they do corse back. Bill Francis said if
they build on young people they will
be in trouble. "We need to look at the
long term. 1 am not saying to forgt
the young people, but also look at the
seniors." Dave Snopko said they have
to look at all age groups. Campbell
agreed saying this group needs an
overall vision that will address the
needs of the permanent popula-
tion. Paul Wilson said they need long-
term plans that will attract people,
keeping people here and future
growth. 'the forum was invited to map
out what they want in Grand Bend
and the top item was a community
centre, the second was an Ice pad and
third was a senior long-term facility.
The Foundation is focusing on
visions of Grand Bend and is encour-
aging people to submit their own
visions for Grand Bend. Check out
the on line blackboard at http://
padlet.com/wall/gbcfwall where pee
pie can share their vision (or just read
what others are saying).
