of the stops on this year's roster.
"We go to many small towns as well
as larger centres," said Doug Jones
organizer of the camp and Louisville
Slugger representative.
"We love going to smaller places
because there aren't the opportunities
to work with former pros in small
towns. 'There's more impact in smaller
communities and it's a bigger show,"
he said.
Jones said the camp promotes the
love of the game more than anything,
but it also gives the participants, up to
age 17, instruction on hitting, base run-
ning, throwing and fielding.
"'They will have the opportunity to

work with the pros and parents
and coaches are invited so they
can hear what the pros are talk-
ing about and keep it going when
we're gone," he added.
'Ihe official list of pros has not
yet been finalized, explained
Jones, but he expects campers
can see Lloyd Moseby, who
played with the Jays and 'Tigers
and was part of the best outfield
team in the history of the Jays;
Mark I:ichhorn who was part of
the Blue Jays' teach during the
back to back world series in '92
and '93 and Scott Mullett, who
played for the Chicago Cubs and
Pittsburgh Pirates along with
Kelly Gruber.
Last year between eight and 10
camps were offered across the
country from Niagara Falls to
P.E.I. This year, on the list is
'Toronto and I lalifax. The camp
has been running for about five
years.
"It's taken off at a good pace,"
said Jones, adding that last year
about 1,000 kids went through
the camp.
"'This is a very personal experi-
ence. Kelly will he holding the
bat with them, so they get that
personal touch and hands on
experience with the guys," he
said.
Me limit for the camp in Clin-
ton will be about 100 kids, with
the first 30 registered receiving
an authentic Louisville Slugger
wood hat with their name
engraved on it.
With help from 1 luron- Bruce
MI' Ben Lobb, who made the call
to Jones to get the camp, the two-
day session will cost $50 instead
of the usual $125. Central Huron
QMt Agency
Kelly Gruber
has also offered to help fund the
program, which runs on a cost
recovery basis.
Lobb said he was inspired to
get the camp to come to Clinton
because of all the work grad
'Ihomspon, Doc Miller and Matt
Langendoen have put in to pro-
moting the game.
"I was inspired to toy part. 1
was able to convince Doug Jones
that 100 kids would register;" said
Lobb.
Lobb said when he played
baseball in (ainton there was at
least one team per age group and
the organization could use some
support and promotion. It was
also the reason he wanted to
bring in sponsors to decrease the
cost (tithe camp.
"I thought $50 was More fair,
so I approached some groups
and organizations for sponsors
and everyone agreed and has
been very excited."
"'They stepped up to the plate,"
he added.
Lobb is also working with farm
groups to have lunch provided to
the campers.
"Everyone feels this is exciting
and we want to show Kelly Gru-
ber and his colleagues that small
rural areas can put on as good a
program as the larger cities."
Clinton is also hosting the 2013
Blue Jays Honda Instructional
Clinic this summer, which will
take place on Friday, June 28,
from noon to 4 p.m. for children
aged eight to 14.
The cost of the camp is $40,
half of which is (ionated back to
the Clinton Minor Baseball
Association.
The camp is one of 4(1 clinics
held throughout Ontario this
year, which features about four
or five instructors from the Blue
Jays Baseball Academy.
The maximum number of
entrants for the camp is 150, said
lake Paddle, intern of Amateur
Baseball with the Blue Jays.
President of Clinton Minor
Baseball, Brad Thompson said
the two clinics are a great way of
promoting the sport to the
community.
"We're trying to promote the
game," said Thompson adding
Ow Clinton club Is still looking
for bantam and midget players.
Ile said spots are filling up
quickly and response to the two
clinics from the community has
been great.
