Love helps build soccer team for girls in Kenya
Charlie Love
As most of you may know,
one of my projects in Africa was
to start a girls soccer team at
Cheryls Childrens home in Nai-
robi, Kenya. At the time there
had been a boys soccer team,
which was started up by a pre-
vious volunteer.
The boys were provided with
uniforms, shoes, and funds
for transportation to their
games. 'Ihe girls however waited
patiently for their time to shine.
The girls loved watching the
boys play soccer, and would
snag the field when they got the
chance to play their own games
in their bare feet and tattered
dresses.
So, I figured the girls had
waited long enough! With the
help of one of the teachers at
the school who volunteered to
coach, we formed a team of
very dedicated girls. With uni-
forms, shoes, socks and some
new soccer balls purchased the
girls were all set. They entered
into the local league and
practised several times a week,
playing games on the week-
ends. They eventually trade
their way to the top of their
league and were all invited to
play in the finals in Mombasa,
which would include girls
teams
from across eastern Africa.
Most of these girls, coining from
extreme poverty, had never
left their home town and had
certainly never had the chance
to make friends with girls from
other countries. Travelling
across the country to the coast
wasto be a HUGE trip for them!
After a lot of practice and
anticipation, the girls finally
made it to Mombasa in March.
Within a year, this team went
from playing soccer with a
deflated ball in their bare feet,
to placing second in the cham-
pionships of all girls soccer
teams in Eastern Africa!! I am so
proud of them and very thank-
ful to everyone who supported
my causes throughout
my travels!

Beauties bust a move It was an exciting Saturday for the Exeter Beauties- not only because they got to exercise with guru
Richard Simmons, but because they were part of something way bigger than that. On Saturday 450 participants representing 75 teams
stretched, shook, shimmied and sweated their way through the six -hour fitness extravaganza at the London Convention Centre.
Hosted by St. Joseph's Health Care Foundation (SJHCF) in support of the breast care centre at St. Joseph's hospital, this event was the first of
its kind for London and was able to raise more than Si million dollars. The 35 -member Exeter Beauties — led the way, raising close to $67,000
through their efforts. Put through five, 50 -minute sessions starting just before 9 a.m., the highlight of the day for most came during the sixth and
final session lead by celebrity fitness guru Richard Simmons.
