Summer Nature Day Camp at Morrison Dam Conservation Area
fHHng up faster than ever, according to educatlon staff members
ARCA
Lust year it looked like the end for
Summer Nature Day Camp at Morri-
son Dam Conservation Area near
Exeter and then parents rallied
together to bring the program back.
The community campaign was so
successful, in fact, Ausable Bayfield
Conservation added a second week
of camp that year.

'Phis year more than half of the
spots are filled with campers from
the previous year wanting to come
back in 2013, said Denise Iszczuk,
Conservation Education Technician.
"'Phis is our best year ever for early
registrations," she said. "That's awe-
some to see and we hope the regis-
trations keep coming in,"
She said donations are starting to
come in from generous community
businesses and individual donors to
keep the camp going and to keep the
fees down to make it possible for
more children to attend. "Donations
are appreciated and they help keep
the program going and to keep fees
as low as possible," she said.
This year's camp is being held July
22-26 for children aged 6-9.
"If someone has a son or daughter
who has attended this day camp they
already know what a great time it is
and if they haven't, I encourage them
to consider enrolling their children
in this fun and active learning expe-
rience," said Iszczuk.
Parent Jessica Schnaithmann said
her children loved the camp when it
was held last year. "My son and
daughter loved the wilderness sur-
vival activities, and shelter building
was their favourite," she said. "The
kids loved this activity so much that
when 1 carne to pick them up at the
end of the day, they had to take me
for a walk in the forest to find the
shelter they had built, and then 1 had
to go inside it."
Research says children are not
spending enough time in the out-
doors playing and learning. Ausable
Bayfield Conservation spokesper-
sons say Summer Nature Day Camp
is one way to address this nature
deficit.
"Summer Nature 1)ay Camp gives
local children the opportunity to
play, grow, and learn about the envi-
rontnent in the great outdoors

through dynamic activities

knowledgeable, full-time
education staff," said lube
Stellingwerff, Conservation
Education Specialist. "I
have seen first-hand how
children taking part in
Summer Nature Day Camp
show wonder in their natu-
ral surroundings as they
catch frogs and crayfish,
and build small temporary
shelters in the woods. They
acquire long-lasting mem-
ories as they sing fun songs,
learn to identify bird calls,
and run and play active
nature games."
Children who have
attended the camp have
great memories such as
"thy favourite moment was
catching the perch in the
minnow trap" and "the best
place we explored was the
forest" and "next summer,
I'd like to come back
again."
Schnaithmann recalls
that "months after summer
nature day camp was over,
my children were still talk-
ing about it and telling me
about animals they remem-
bered and the neat facts
they had learned."
The Summer Nature Day
Camp is delivered by adult,
full-time, experienced,
environmental educators.
Ausable Bayfield Conserva-
tion ensures there is at
least one instructor for
every ten students so the
camp is limited to the first
20 registrants, so the local
conservation organization
encourages parents and
guardians to register their
children as soon as possible.
The camp runs at Morrison Dant
Conservation Area near Exeter from
July 22 to 26 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
daily. Early drop-off and late pick-up
is available. '('he fee is $160 per week
per child for parents and guardians
who register before May 3. The fee is
$170 after the early -bird (late.
The Summer Nature Day (:amp
includes daily nature -themed activi-

noon snacks and juice are provided.
