Aquafest Year 5 of Raising Awareness as Water Levels Drop
Lambton Shores
Makes Aquafest a
Community
Committee of
Council
Lakeshore Advance
Aquafest is celebrating its 5th
anniversary raising awareness about
water protection by becoming a
Community Committee of Council
in Lambton Shores. Council
approved the move at its meeting
4c March 4. Councilor Dave
ire will sit on the committee of
to volunteers, who work to mount
the three-day eco -festival every
August. "Aquafest has gained
momentum each year spreading
the message about the need to pre-
serve and protect water, educating
young and old alike and having fun
in the process." says Co-chair Jan-
ette Baillie. "Being a Community
Committee of Council helps us to
connect with more people and
organizations throughout the
greater municipality.'
"It's such a good fit, as Lampton
Shores stretches along one of the
world's greatest bodies of fresh
water and many people are alarmed
by the record Iow water levels," says
Councilor Dave Maguire. "It's a
great opportunity for us to work
within our municipality and reach
out to others, to slake a difference
and help save precious water
resources for now and for genera-
tions to come."
The 5th Annual Aquafest will be
held August 9,10 and 1 1 th, 2013 in
various locations throughout Lanni).
ton Shores. Signature events like the
student art contest, the Great Lakes
Chowder Competition, children's
educational activities, hikes and dis-
plays will all be hack this year.
Aquafest always features a high pro-
file speaker or performer and the
search is now underway for this
year's headliner.
"We find that having a high pro-
file name helps us to reach a
broader audience with our message
about water. We are always open to
having new events.Anyone wanting
to hold an event during Aquafest
that helps to promote awareness of
water run potentially come under
the Ativalest umbrella and our com-
mittee will help to promote all
events that are water related taking
place that weekend," says (:o -(;hair
Jennifer Mosso!).
"We can do without 0 lot of things
in life, but clean water is not one of
therm. We tend to take water for
granted here, but all over the world,
including in Canada, there are water
shortages occurring more and
more. Learning to turn off the tap
when you brush your teeth, or water
your (awns and not your driveway,
are ways we ran all help save our
water," says Co -(;huh' Baillie.
Aquafest began as a project of the
Environment Committer of the
(rand Bend Community Founda-
tion in 2008. Operating under the
Foundation's umbrella has been
very rewarding and has allowed the
festival to grow each year. Moving
forward in their partnership with
Lambton Shores, the committee
thanks the Foundation for their
administrative support for the past
four years, and their financial sup-
port as a key funder this year. "All of
our funders have been very gener-
ous and we thank them for their
ongoing support" says Co-chair
Mossop.
The Aquafest Committee thanks
Lambton Shores for its new partner-
ship, and encourages anyone with
an interest in water preservation to
volunteer for this fun event. Check
