Anti -turbine protesters stick up for the tundra swans

(;RANI) l3l:NI) - With thousands of
tundra swans honking in the hack -
ground, dozens of anti -wind protest-
ers rallied Sunday against plans for
giant turbines in the area.
"These companies have 00 con-
cerns for nature. It is just sad," said
1)ave Griffiths of the citizens' group

'I'ht' protesters harvested signa-
tures from more tllall 50 carloads for
a petition calling for a stop to plaits
to establish wind farms in the area.
Opponents maintain the turbines
will disrupt the migratory patterns of
the swans and other wildlife.
Nextl?ra Energy Canada, which is
seeking government approval for the
Goshen and Jericho wind farms, has
said it will abide by any setbacks
required to protect the birds.
At least one of the 110 metre tur-
bines is proposed for the stopover
area in the't'hedford Bog south of
Grand Bend, where thousands of the
swans were resting Sunday Morning
en route to Canada's north.
Griffiths said his group is encour-
aging local Municipal councils to
challenge the wind -turbine compa-
nies with such tactics as requiring
fees in the hundreds of thousands of
dollars.
