Lakeshore Advance, 2013-02-13, Page 88 Lakeshore Advance • Wednesday, February 13, 2013 Legacy Centre garners gold for Lambton Shores Lynda HIIIman-Rapley Lakeshore Advance On January 21, Lampton Shores received the official notice that the Legacy Recreation Centre has exceeded the LEEI)* Silver stand- ard and has received the LEE})' Gold certification. 'the Legacy Rec- reation Centre is the first Ll:l?D' Certified building in 'Medford. LEER' Certification distinguishes building projects that have demon- strated a commitment to sustaina- bility by meeting the highest performance standards. In Medford the aging'Ihedford- Bosanquet Arena facility (built in the early 1970's) was identified as being in need of a major face- lift and enhancement and monies were being put away to build up reserve funds for that purpose. With the announcement of Stimu- lus Funding, council seized on the opportunity to undertake a major renovation that would not only revitalize a key component of the community, make it more efficient to operate (through state of the art energy efficiencies) but incorporate a new accessible community lihruty as part of what is now being referred to as the Medford Legacy Centre. The new facility will not only have state of the art energy efficiencies making it the first I.EED designated building in Lambton Shores, is entirely accessible as well. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (I.EEI)') Green Building Rating System encourages global adoption of sus- tainable green building and devel- opment practice's through the crea- tion and implementation of a universally understood and accepted tools and perform- ance criteria. 1.E1:D' is a third -party certification program and an inter- nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and oper- ation of high performance green buildings. It provides building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings' performance. 1.1:1:1)• promotes it whole -build- ing approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environ- mental health: sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency materials selec- tion, indoor environmental quality. Certification is based on the total point score achieved, following an independent review and an audit of selected credits. With four possible levels of certification (certified, sil- ver, gold and platinum), 1.1.1?1)' is flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of green building strate- gies that hest fit the constraints and goals of particular projects. 'The Canadian rating systems are an adaptation of the 1IS Green Building Council's (USGI3(:) LEEIr Green Building Rating System, tai- lored specifically for Canadian cli- mates, construction practices and regulations. 'the rating systems are adapted to the Canadian market through an inclusive process that engages stakeholders and experts representing the various sectors of the Canadian industry. During the design of the Legacy Centre Fluent Engineering incor- porated various design features into the project for the purpose of pursuing the LEED* Silver designa- tion for the facility. 'These design features included: A new high -effi- ciency refrigeration plant for the ice rink; A low -emissivity ceiling over the rink playing surface to lower radiant heat loss from the ice to the roofing assembly and minimize loads on the refrigera- tion plant; Low -flow lavatory HOME PLAN OF THE WEEK Brian Johnson Nth Plumbing & Healing • FIREPLACES • HOT TUBS • ELECTRICAL • A/C OFFICE : 519-2384570 CELL : 519-619.8997 10 C1dV(11I`;(' 111 1h1`. )( fi'( 1 SII '( i';t.' x(111 519-238-5383 (TANLAKE CEMENT CONTRACTOR • Concrete Forming • Foundations f1 Floors • Coloured i impressed Concrete • Driveways 6 Sidewalks R.R. 2 GRAND BEND Dan 519.243.3261 Bruce 519.238.2522 Grand Bend Decor & Flooring Centre 48 Ontario St. N.
