Lakeshore Advance, 2013-01-30, Page 12iz Lakeshore Advance • Stitchers on Sumac celebrate 10 years of quiltin Lynda HIIIman-Rapley Cousins Carrie Anne and Diane wanted to get together someplace just to sew for a couple days without interruptions. "We have busy lives and never have time to enjoy just relaxing at our sewing machines," says Diane Carson. "We talked to Carrie Anne's Morn Millie Steeper about using her unfinished basement, in fact her whole house for a girls weekend of sewing. And that is how the Stitchers on Sumac began. After Steeper agreed the cousins invited a few more relatives and friends to join them. It was a couple years before they called them- selves the Stitchers on Sumac (a street in Sounthcott), but the name suites them. Carson says a couple of friends have gone and new ones are only too happy to be invited. "It has been 10 years now and we look forward to being together to spend the weekend. " She explains they all bring their own projects and have lost track of the number of quilts made during this time. "Some quilts take the weekend and return the next year for our show and tell, while others return with no more done on them since the year before. We learn of weddings in the family and new babies coming. All these occasions mean a new quilt must be made. " She adds that they also show up with new recipes, eat too much, gossip, exchange quilt ideas, learn the newest quilting trends, and sometimes a relative of the next generation joins us to learn this won- derful past time. fellowship Some of the quilters this year (Back L -R) Becky Wright, Cassandra McAlpine, Norma Wright, Carrie Anne McAlpine, Sherri Dodge, Millie Steeper, Ginger Weber Front; Abby Wright, (future quilter) & Diane Carson.
