Lakeshore Advance, 2013-01-23, Page 15Wednesday, January 23, 2013 • Lakeshore Advance 15 Students learn about dangers of thin ice, seasonal high water through Spring Water Awareness Program (SWAP) Ausable Bayfield Conservation provides program free -of -charge to about one dozen schools each year; wintertime is good tiine to educate as snow melts More than 16,000 local elementary - 01 students have learned about the ers of high water and thin ice t ► nks to the Spring Water Awareness Program (SWAP). Ausable Bayfield Conservation is providing the safety awareness program free -of -charge for the eight consecutive year. "It would be beneficial for students to experience the program as soon as it can be scheduled in a school': said Den- ise Iszczuk, Conservation Education Technician with Ausable Rayfield Con- servation Authority (ARCA), "'the high temperatures of this season's mild win- ter have caused rapid melting of snow and that led to some high and fast -flow- ing water in the area during recent days:' Ausable Rayfield Conservation offers the program on a first -corse, first- served basis and usually visits about half of the 22 watershed schools each year. 'lite program runs from early Feb- ruary to early March. 'Ihe Spring Water Awareness Program is offered during the time of year when the waterways have the highest level of risk to children playing around them. "Snow and ice melts in rivers, lakes, ponds and streams in winter," lszczuk said. "The water is cold and the banks are slippery. Children learn, through the activities of the SWAP program, why they have to avoid waterways during a season of thin ice and high, fast -flowing water:' Protecting life and property is part of the conservation authority mandate and SWAP helps students understand for themselves the dangers high water and thin ice can pose. The students don't just get talked to about the dan- gers of water at this time of year - they learn through dynamic interactive activities. Ausable Rayfield Conserva- tion education staff members deliver three presentations designed for differ- ent elementary grade -level groups - primary, Junior, and intermediate. Melting ice and snow, combined with rain, makes it especially important for peo- ple to stay away from water- courses. Parents, guardians, and teachers can find some safety -around -water infor- mation at the ARCA website at abca.on.ca and searching for the keyword 'SWAP' or by typing in the following 1)111, address: http://www.abca.on.ca/ page.php?page=spring- water-awareness-progranl- swap The SWAT' program is funded with the support of the Ausable Rayfield Conser- vation foundation and mem- ber Municipalities of the Aus- able Hayfield watershed.
