Mayor asks gallery to respect the process
Lynda Hillman-Rapley
Lakeshore Advance
Before the regular council
meeting on January 14th, mayor
Bill Weber gave a statement
regarding some council mem-
ber's concern for their safety.
These concerns stemmed from
the December 17th meeting that
spilled to the parking lot.
In his delegation regarding
public conduct, Grand Bend
resident Bob Sharen said the
mayor had touched on some of
what he was going to speak
about. He said the meeting was
not under control from the
start.
"1 have always addressed you
with the respect due to the office
that you hold, which is only the
correct protocol. It would seem
appropriate that all in attend-
ance at the various meetings f
council show the same decorum
to you and council." Ile went on
to discuss the (natter of the can-
didate who was called by a
Council illember and later chose
not to run for the position of
ward four councilor. Sharen told
council in his delegation there
was no breach in this regard.
Deputy mayor Elizabeth
Davis-Dagg also told council
they had no process in place
where a council metlll)er could
not poll a candidate before the
assignment with the council of
the whole. Later, in question
period, a member of the public
asked the deputy mayor even if
there was no process, wouldn't
common sense prevail? The
candidate has said publically
there was only one member of
council who called hila.
Back to the "boorish and dis-
graceful conduct of some of the
members of the gallery', Sharen
asked "for their own protection
as well as the interest of a better
relationship with the electorate"
were they prepared to take
action on this matter?
in his last point, Sharen said
in regard to the turmoil at the
last (sleeting, there was events in
the hall that lead to an unfortu-
nate situation in the parking lot.
"I will accept the responsibil-
ity for that event; 1 should not
have allowed my frustrations
with the personal attacks that
have been leveled against me
and others to manifest them-
selves in a negative way."
"1 will not accept the version
as sent to council by Ms.
Andraza. (Former council mem-
ber Shirley Andraza sent council
and Sharen her version as to
what occurred in the parking lot.
"It is inaccurate and embel-
lished to reflect negatively on
isle," he said in a prepared
statement.
The situation outside got
heated and both Cam Ivey and
Gerry Rupke told Sharen to "get
out of there" before he had a
(medical) problem. He recog-
nized both men for their efforts.
Andraza told the Lakeshore
Advance she stands by what she
wrote to council. She said at the
end of the day, "it was unneces-
sary for him (Sharen), with his
bad health record to try to take
on a parking lot of people, no
matter what happened inside."
(:f IAHTTY BOX CONCERNS
In a notice of motion, Lamb -
ton Shores councilor i)oug Bon -
esteel asked that staff be directed
to prepare a strategy/protocol to
regulate/manage the location of
charitable donation boxes
throughout the municipality.
Lampton Shores, like a
number of cities, has Many large
clothing donation bins placed
around town 00 private prop-
erty. While they're all about the
sante size and shape, not all
have a clear purpose.
"Is this really our mandate?"
asked councilor Martin
Underwood.
These bins are cropping up
around town and Bonesteel says
he is hearing about donation
boxes that may not always be
operated by charitable organiza-
tions and that any/all proceeds

addressing these concerns.
While many of the bins in this area
are for local businesses such as Bless-
ings in Zurich, the one pictured here at
the Grand Bend beer store is for the
Mission Canada of International Aid.
That bin says, "Mission Canada of
International Aid: 1ti'.h1.11.O. - 1989,"
and includes a charitable number. A bit
of research turns up that the charity is
the World Mahan 1 lindu Organization of

education and maintaining a place of
worship. Property Owners are not
responsible for the unwanted bins.
