Lakeshore Advance, 2013-01-16, Page 4Wednesday, January 16, 2013 • Lakeshore Advance 3 Queen's Jubilee medal for Joe Wooden Lakeshore Advance The St. Joseph and Area Historical Society is proud to announce that Joe Wooden was awarded The Queen's Diatnond Jubilee Medal at Queen's Park by the Honourable Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, and Minister of Citizen- ship and Immigration on December 20, 2012. This medal is pre- sented to honour individual Canadians who have made signifi- cant contributions to the community and to the proud heritage of Canada. Joe Wooden has been involved in community work all of his adult life. Ile has been an educator, a historian, a local politician, a church warden and synod representative, a director and board member of the Huron Country Playhouse and Blyth Festival (theatre) and an author of three books of local historical value. Joe came to Exeter in 1955 to begin a teaching career at South 1 Iuron District High School. 1 Ie taught history/geography and in 1967 was promoted to principal. He was elected to the Exeter Town Council in 1962. While a Councillor he was chair of the town planning board and the local Canadian Centennial Com- mittee in 1967. Joe was an Anglican Church warden while he lived in Exeter and has continued to he active at St. John by the Lake, Grand I3end, his current home parish. I le has been a delegate to synod; currently he remains on the Diocesan Council. Ile received the Order of } luron in 2(X)4 in a presentation by the Bishop of I luron. This quote from the bishop tells us "whether it is through sitting on a committee for I luron Church Camp or being a part of a group gathered to do some visioning. Joe is always ready to respond where he is called:' 'Theatre has always interested Joe and he worked as a volun- teer for the I luron Country Playhouse when that theatre was just getting started. I le was on that Board for several years prior to it becoming part of Drayton Entertainment. Currently, Joe is a vol- unteer and supporter of Blyth Festival. A spokesperson at Blyth said, "Joe is a very deserving candidate for this nomination:' Joe researched and wrote, "A ()nun to Beat Upon" published in 1972. It tells the story of the early settlement of St. Joseph, Ontario, and especially the history of Narcisse Cantin, a French Canadian settler. 'Ibis book has been reprinted several times and it was a primary source of information for the play "Narcisse" which was mounted in our community and won a 2011 Gover- nor General's I listory Award for Excellence in Community Pro- gramming. Joe is a member of the St. Joseph & Area I historical Society where he remains an active participant. A number of years ago he composed the historical data for use on several information plaques in the small park at St. Joseph. In 1973, Joe published a second book, "A I listory of Exeter" to coincide with that town's centennial. Joe has said he hopes that this book will provide some insight into the life of small town Ontario and make enjoyable reading for local residents. South 1luron District }Ugh School had a 100 -year reunion in 2000. Once again, Joe a now retired principal served on the organizing committee and together, with another retiree, wrote the book "From a I lard ()Id School" which became a wonderful fundraiser for the reunion. Joe Wooden turned 80 on November 11. the has contributed much to the betterment of Huron County throughout his life and it was important for the St. Joseph and Area I historical Society members to give him deserving recognition by nominating him for a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal.
