HURON COUNTY COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE
Huron County Warden h change of heart
Cheryl Heath
QMI Agency
Iluron County's Warden had a change of
heart that he made note of at Huron County's
Dec. 9 committee -of -the -whole session.
Bernie MacLellan (Huron East) says his
epiphany about the Iluron Ileritage Fund,
which doles out grants to various culture -
boosting causes, came in the form of a recent
Governor General's Award for Excellence in
Community Programming of a Heritage
Project to the St. Joseph and Area Historical
Society for its capacity crowd -drawing pro-
duction of Narcisse, written by local play-
wright Paul Ciufo.
"I was not in favour of the Ileritage Fund
being spent on things that don't include
bricks and mortar," says MacLellan, noting he
had the impression that things like theatrical
productions had "no lingering effect.'
But, says MacLellan, he now stands
corrected.
In congratulating both the county and the
Municipality of Bluewater for supporting the
production, which featured more than 50
local actors and had the support of more than
100 volunteers, MacLellan adds he now sees
the value of endorsing projects that go beyond
the tangible.
New Chairs
Howick's Reeve will be the new chairman
for Huron County's day two committee -of -
the -whole sessions thanks to a nomination by
Joe Steffler (Huron East).
While Coun. Deb Shewfelt (Goderich)
nominated James Ginn (Central Huron) and
Coun. Paul Gowing (Morris Turnberry) nomi-
nated Bill Dowson (Bluewater), both of them
turned down the opportunity.
Ultimately, Gowing nominated Dowson for
the vice -chair's position, which is a post Blue -
water's Mayor accepted.
New Name
What was tentatively known as the I luron
East Seniors Apartment building will be
sporting a new permanent name thanks to a
recent online contest held by the county's
social services department.
Housing Manager Barb Hall reports 36
names were submitted, with the moniker
Country View Seniors Apartment, receiving
the most support from the contest's judges.
Councillors endorsed that decision.
PRISM Parameters
Huron County's EMS crews are ready to roll
out a new Protective Response Interactive
Systems Management (PRISM) protocol,
which is mostly in line with the one set out by
Environment Canada when it comes to
weather-related warnings.
In addressing the protocol, EMS Chief Dave
Lew says the change was requested following
the F3 tornado that swept through of the
county's municipalities on Aug. 21.
Councillors also learned the EMS depart-
ments plan to use social media tools in the
event of an emergency or pending storm.
Too Low
At least one county councilor believes the
statistics are too low.
In reviewing the number of county workers
voluntarily taking the flu vaccine at the
December session, Coun. James Ginn (Cen-
tral Iluron) says it is unfortunate that the

"1 would like to see something in places to

ures that show 63 per cent of 1 lomes' staff and
86 per cent of Homes' residents have been
vaccinated.
glomes administrator Barb Spring;all notes
her department is working with the l luron
County Health link on the issue, and that
there are still some clinics taking place,
"You are correct, we cannot force peupl

Ginn adds it is ironic the Ministry of 1 alum'
can enforce safety standards, like the use of

enforcement.
A query pitched by Coun. l)eb Shewfelt
(Goderich) revealed about six of the countv's
16 councillors have been vaccinated.

/HOME PLAN OF THE WEEK RELEASE DATE: DEC. 25TH- DEC. 31ST, 2011
PLAN NUMBER 9-3-212 CHARMING TWO-STOREY NARROW LOT PLAN
Designed especially for a narrow lot, this charming two-storey family home includes three bedrooms plus a den, as well as a
terrace and a covered deck at the back.
Entry is through a foyer, where the den is to the left. Directly ahead, through an archway, is a coat cupboard, as well as the
U-shaped staircase up to the second -floor sleeping bedrooms.
A second archway leads into the dining -room and kitchen, while just beyond, under a dramatic vaulted ceiling, is the great room.
Located in a space at the back of the home that looks over the garden, the great room features french doors that open onto a
covered deck with a sunny terrace beyond. A gas fireplace will make this room cozy during the cooler months.
The dining room is separated from the stairwell by a railing, and includes an optional buffet, which will increase storage and
serving space.
The kitchen's raised eating bar and prep island divides it from the dining room. The U-shaped counter configuration promises
efficiency, and a large pantry in one corner provides extra room for stapes and canned goods. The window over the double sink
looks out to the covered deck.
Also on the main floor is the laundry room, as well as a two-piece powder room with a built-in shelf.
Upstairs, the master suite includes a window with an extra -deep sill that overlooks the front garden. The ensuite includes a
soaker tub, as well as a glass shower stall, and the roomy walk-in closet offers space for the most clothes -conscious couple.
The second and third bedrooms, both overlooking the back garden, share a three-piece bathroom. A linen closet is located
nearby. handy to all three bedrooms. A railing separates the stairwell from the upper landing, and there is a window on the lower
landing.
Exterior finishes include horizontal siding and shingled gable ends, as well as decorative oval vents in the upper gables. The
shingles are echoed in the bases of the pilasters that support the covered front porch.
