The Friends of Pinery Provincial Park is a
charitable organization dedicated to
education, promotion, preservation and
support of Pinery Provincial Park. We are in
need of volunteers! here are some reasons,
one for each letter of Friends, why you
should consider becoming involved with the
Friends of Pinery Park, as a member, as a
volunteer and/or as a member of the Board
of Directors.
FUN It is fun being involved with the
Friends of Pinery Park. As a volunteer, you
can participate in diverse activities, such as
helping to build rolling boardwalks to protect
the dunes (we built over 70 sections this
year!), helping at the popular fish fries and
assisting with the annual bird count.
RAC(: For five years now, the Friends of
Pinery Park has been putting on a Walk/Run
Road Race on the weekend after
Thanksgiving. This is a very successful fund-
raiser for us. With over (it0) runners this year
we raised $12,000 to be used to help fund
our initiatives in the park that support
educational programming, research and
environmental projects. You can help by
running or walking in the race and /or by
volunteering as a marshal, registrar etc.
IDEAS The Friends of Pinery Park is
always looking for new ideas about how to
increase our fund-raising capacity. As a
volunteer or as a Board member, you can
assist with the generation and
implementation of these ideas. if you have a
background In fund-raising, tourism, event
management or retail, your participation as a
board member would be much appreciated.
ENVIRONMENT As a member of Friend
of Pinery Park, you are helping to support a
worthy environmental cause. For example,
for the past two years, the Friends of Pinery
Park has provided funding and support for
important turtle rehabilitation research. In
addition, the Friends of Pinery Park provides
support for many of the educational
programmes put on by the Park, such as
Junior Friends and Future Naturalists. These
educational projects can serve to develop a
life-long appreciation of the environment in
our children,
NEW INITIATIVES Several important
new initiatives are being considered by
Pinery Park. The Friends of Pinery Park is
hoping to assist with some or all of these
initiatives, and there will be a need for
volunteers.
DUNES Anyone who has wandered the
beach in the Grand Bend area will have
appreciated the graceful, grass -covered
dunes. As a volunteer, you can assist with
protecting these fragile dunes by helping
with rolling board walk construction. You
can also assist with the annual dune grass
harvest.
SHOP As a member of the Friends of
Pinery Park, you are entitled to a 15%
discount on any purchases you make at our
nature store in the Pinery Visitor Centre.
There is an interesting variety of nature -
related gifts, books, children's products etc.
from which to choose.
We hope you have found some convincing
reasons for becoming involved in the Friend
of Pinery Park. If you would like to join, or
would just like more information, please
contact the Friends of Pinery Park at 519-
243-1521 or email fopppoxford;net.

Caring neighbours
bursting with pride
It is always easy to write stories
from our communities about
pride of property and pride of
organization- that is a given here- we
hear of it all the time. last week I
received calls, even at home, from
local people who were so proud of
their young neighbour, Emily Mus-
sio- you could hear the excitement in
the voice.
Mussio, 11 carpe home from Spain
this week with four gold and two sil-
ver medals from her sparring Compe-
tition. I have done many articles on
this young athlete as her sport takes
her to many countries and competi-
tions with her recent trip being no
exception. (See Page 3)
What was fun this time- were the
neighbours calling me bursting with
pride. As a group of supporters, they
decorated her home and wanted arae,
and the local readers, to know just
how happy they were for her. They
have watched closely as this young
woman succeeds again and again.
Congratulations Emily! Your neigh-
bours wanted to make sure you know
how much they care.
its support of local community arts.
The November 2nd coverage of our annual
meeting, celebrating the fortieth anniversary
of Guild was outstanding! You highlighted
the history and current function of the Guild
in an exemplary manner. The photos and
layout were amazing. We are hopeful that
due to your coverage we can entice many
new members.
I.ambton Shores is fortunate to have a
local newspaper that is so collaborative and
willing to work with groups to enhance our
community. Thank you so much for your
professionalism and vision. It is a pleasure to
work with you.
