More than 40 people attended the second annual Spirit Trail Super -Natural Hike on Thursday, October 27 at the MacNaughton-Morrison Section of the South 1
Huron Rall, hosted by the Friends of the South Huron Trail. 1
Successful Spblt hall super -natural hike
Jim O'Toole, Chairman of the Friends of
the South Huron 'frail, and a leader of one of
the two hike groups, said "everybody I talked
to, actors as well as participants, really
enjoyed the hike. It was fun as well as
educational by providing good factual infor-
mation about some of the ancestors of this
area as well as getting an insight into the
environmental changes that have occurred.
We also got to meet a real live present day
nerdy scientist. The actors were great."
Some students from South I luron District
high School in Exeter were among the actors
to take part.
"I was really glad the high school students
were involved," O'Toole said. "They certainly
had lots Of enthusiasm and acting ability."

Whopping pay hike proposed for county politicians
Paul Morden
Lakeshore Advance
A new relxrt is recommending that the
annual pay for Lambton County council-
lors jump an average of $6,000.
The 17 mayors and other councillors
haven't had a raise since 2008 and
currently earn an average of $9,000 annu-
ally in base salary and meeting pay.
Councillors voted Wednesday to wait
until Nov. 30 to debate the proposed pay
hike, to allow time for the public to react
to the news.
1 was surprised the recotnmendation
da was as high as it was," said Don McGu-
MIF gan, mayor of Brooke-Alvinston
'Township.
"1 will have trouble voting for that
much."
'Ihe survey found the pay that Lantbton
councillors receive ranks them eighth out
of nine in a group of Ontario communi-
ties it looked at.
It's recommending that the honorar-
ium making up councillors' base pay
increase from $5,904 a year to $12,000.
Councillors receive an additional $118 for
each meeting they attend.
The report says the recommendation
would take the average pay of I.ambton
county councillors to $15,000, and put
their earnings closer to the median of
comparable communities.
1t would also bcx'st the county's budget
by about $97,500 a year.
The recommendation was initially
dealt with behind closed doors, but coun-
cillors voted Wednesday to move the
issue to their open meeting.
"It is unacceptable to deal with those
issues in camera, said Sarnia Mayor Mike
Bradley, who moved to have the debate
put over to the next meeting so the public
has time to read the report.
It is public money and 1 think the pub-
lic should know what we're making now
and what is pmpose*d," McCugan said.
"1 have no problem discussing it in
open council, because that's where it
should bee'
County councillors were getting a cost -
of -living increase annually until the
budget debate in 2009.
With the Western world tumbling into
recession in early 2009, council backed a
motion by St. Clair'lbwnship Mayor Steve
Arnold to freeze their pay that year at
2008 levels.
And, that's where it has stayed.
Arnold, now the county's warden, said
he believes the report's recommendation
is "reasonable."
Point Edward Mayor Dick Kirkland
said, 1 think this is the wrong way to go."
tie added he would like to see council's
pay adjusted annually, based on the cost
of living and increases in contracts with
the county's unionized workers.
"Anytime it comes up like this," Kirk-
land said, It's nothing but a headache for
everybody."
Bradley said the recommended increase is "a really difficult
thing to even think about when the whole message, at the local,
provincial and federal level, is restraint."
'Ihe report doesn't call for a change in the warden's current
annual salary of $57,408, saying it's already near the top of the
list in the comparison group.
The report also looks at what the county pays its staff and
calls for increases to bring those pay levels up to the median.
