it was an evening of celebration at Hessenland Friday as family and friends celebrated the 48 nominees who are the 2011 Leaders of the Decade. The Grand Bend
Community Foundation hosted the event to honour a small number of the amazing leaders in this community and saluted everyone who contributes through their
gifts of time, talent and expertise to make Grand Bend a better place.

The Municipality of Lambton
Shores, a finalist in the 10,001
20,000 population category of the
2011 National Edition of Communi-
ties in Bloom, received a 5 Bloom
rating and a special mention for
Grand Bend Beach revitaliza-
tion. Following their evaluation of
the community, volunteer judges
Sandy Cairns (Gravenhurst, ON)
and Odette Sabourin-Dumais
(Saint -Bruno, QC) wrote, "Lambton
Shores is a municipality comprised
of amalgamated towns and villages,
located on the southern shores of
Lake Huron. Nature lovers will dis-
cover in the area freshwater
beaches and dunes, abundance of
wildlife, Carolinian forests and a
unique oak savanna. The Grand
Bend Beach revitalization project
has contributed greatly to create a
space that is more family oriented
and to enhance the natural beauty
of the beach and lake area. The
many improvements include beau-
tification with addition of gardens
and native habitats as well as a
boardwalk and look out areas"
CHI member Ruth lllman said
this is wonderful news and was
thrilled to learn that Lampton
Shores was one of three finalists
(froth all population categories for
the Environmental Action Award. "
This says a lot about what we are
doing throughout Lambton Shores
to preserve, protect and promote
our sensitive environmental areas
and all of the projects which pro-
mote energy efficiencies. Beach
enhancement also.
The group was bringing back the
written report, and that will help
plan for next year. From Quebec,
co-chairs Catherine Minielly and
Grace Decker say this is a a
whole new ball game from the pro-
vincial competition and they will
report back to Lambton Shores
council on Feb. 7 to explain what
that means. Please see the Bluewa-
ter story on Page 24.
